I own what is probably the first modern water cooled motocycle. A Suzuki GT750, 3 cylinder, 2 cycle. A good motorcycle with no problems with the cooling system.
To me it's a non-issue.When I chose to buy my Buell I didn't even consider what type of cooling it used. The air cooling has been used from the beginning of motorcycles and has proven to work well.
I am happy with the Buell engine, it is a 9 and I don't need any more power than it has. It has never overheated and I never have to check or change coolant.

It rained on the way home, water cooling is over rated. ;)

Saves wear and tear on the bathtub though.

Bads1,
Nobody doubts you.
I'm sure someday, maybe sooner than later, Harley may go to all water cooled engines.
I don't know for sure, but a constant temperature probably is easier to tune for emissions.
That factor may be what drives them to water cooling.

Tightening noise restrictions will lead to water cooling too. The water jacket helps to muffle mechanical noises from the engine...

Water cooling has its advantages.

But I wouldn't have bought my XB if it was water cooled.

Maybe it will be mandated by EPA or DOT regs someday, but I detest engineering by regulation.

Let's not be like HD riders and rebel against modern changes. Sure, leave an all air cooled bike for some.......but dammit, liquid cool some for about 140 hp for the others and keep at least some models up to snuff on HP with the rest of world. I LOVE MY BUELL, but would love it even more with an added 40 horses.

Supply and Demand.... More HP......

I Demand a Water Cooled motor or I won't buy another buell.. I'll buy a S3 or a monster instead..

Water cool buells and people will be busting down door trying to get one.

I agree...XBs are great motorcycles. All it needs is a V-twin motor that can compete with the likes of Aprilia, Ducati, Honda, Suzuki SV1000 etc.

The moment this happens I'll get another Buell. I may even sell one of my BMWs....

I would for sure vote to go on ahead and go with a water cooled engine. I just bought a new 06 buell but if they came out with a water cooled version of the firebolt with about 30 more hp, a few more revs and a slightly longer wheelbase Id trade it in on one tomorrow.

They made it look just like a mini Street Rod.

There are 10X more buyers wishing the Buell was water cooled and had more horsepower than those that want air cooled. I don't care either way.

I think they can make a water cooled bike that competes more with the Japanese manufacturers and keep air cooled too. A Buell for everyone. We all win.

Water cooled? Why?

How would my right leg stay warm?

Sorry I like the lump and I am a fan of the fan. I love the XB, the simplicity of the machine. the air-cooled engine is the heart and soul of the bike, it is what gives the Buell its character. If it was water cooled, it would be like everything else on the road. Now, that doesn't mean I wouldn't buy a new one, but I love the machines and the brand as-is.

Wouldn't water cooling make Buells heavier? Isn't that going against the Trilogy of Tech(TM)?

Sam

Well, the rear fan would go away as well as the oil cooler I suspect. Weight issues would get managed fine I think.

How easy it is to start sounding like the Harley dudes in the mid 80's when the Evo motor was introduced. The shovelhead folks resisted the change but the change saved Harley, and as result, we are here on this forum.

But I sure like my XB9S just the way it is, lumpy motor with more power than I really need. The only thing that might tempt me is an updated Blast.

Mere water cooling means nothing. If executed in Buell fashion, it would be something to behold.

I still prefer simplicity and the wonderful artistic appearance of my Buell air-cooled engine.

I like the air-cooled BMW R-engines too.

And the air-cooled Ducs, and especially the old air-cooled Triumphs and Nortons.

Hey all you water cooling fans, slap a radiator and a wind powered water pump on your Buell and wrap a couple copper lines around your cylinder heads and call your motorcycle "water-cooled". Woopdeedoo.

If that would be true, it may provide a stronger argument to consider the change, in addition to added power. My Suzuki V-Strom still has both an oil cooler and water cooling so I think in real life it may not be the case. Since there are many great bikes out there with water cooling, why change the nature and character of what makes a Buell a Buell? I think it is what it is, and this is why many of us like it for that reason. Or at least I do.

I have yet to see a perfect all around best bike for everyone. I still subscribe to the multi-bike theory, if you can afford it. Otherwise, you have to make peace with the best compromise you can accept.

After many other brands all of which were water cooled i was convinced that power fade and eratic performance was all you could expect with air cooled old school technology, all my MX bikes were h2o cooled! how could a sport bike be air cooled?... finally bought a buell...well after 1500 miles Im sooo psyched on this bike... Id be bummed if they changed it now hell I just signed up! dont really know what i am saying except that I am so surprised with the performance of this lump an air cooled thing... its not my VTR but its pretty damn bad ass....love love love it!!!

I like the fan... I love pulling up to somewhere with my buddy on his buell... and both of us shutting down and suddenly the fans kick into high gear... we both look at each other and smile.

Some may like it... some may not... we've grown to love it. It's part of being different, which is what owning a buell entails.

As far as water-cooled goes... leave that to the bikes that have minimal airflow around the heads.

I like air cooled engines for the same reason that airplanes use air cooled engines. Power to weight ratio is higher and the engines are more reliable than water cooled.

Water cooled engines make more power, but at the cost of reduced reliability, greater maintenance and increased weight.

Ask yourself, of every vehicle that left you stranded, how many times was it related to a "water cooling" problem.

But, if Buell wants to win in AMA racing they'll need to build a water cooled, 4cyl., DOHC copycat... 'cause that's what the AMA (and tire manufacturers) cater to.
