im not saying it is a girls bike but a large part of the sporster market would be girls and beginners. I personally would not own any other bike that has an hd badge but a sporster because as you stated the sporster engine has lote of potentinal. I also wouldnt cruzerfiy it like most people that own them do either (put big funky handle bars, foward controls, sissy bars big fluffy seats and rake them out) but thats just me. Like i say you have to look at who they sell most of the sportys to

Why say Buells are "much" slower than "most" other bikes? Maybe in crazy top speed runs, but not in quickness. Sure, they're not among the quickest in a straight line, but they certainly aren't slow! A low 11 second 1/4 mile approaching 120 mph is still very respectable. Not many people spend their time only drag-racing a motorcycle on the street. Top speed is not everything either! That is the only thing the 600s have over them. Yeah, much faster motorcycles are available, but just because they are "extreme" doesn't mean Buells are slow! On real roads a Lightning is super quick. Low-down torque matters... something that the 600s lack a considerable amount of, even their peak is lacking. Buells are MUCH quicker through the twisties with a competent rider. And they are super fun!

This thread is arguing liquid-cooling or not, not how they compare to completely different beasts. I don't think anyone claimed Buells are superior in every performance measure!

When we get our new air-cooled RR based engine for the street... look out! They will be wickedly fast in the straights too!

Buells do out-handle racer replicas... this is not delusion at all... a major factor in handling prowess besides chassis stiffness and mass centralization is very low unsprung weight... the front wheel being the most important. Buell has the competition whooped in mass centralization and with the ZTL system... unsprung weight. It is extremely beneficial in real world roads where you want the front wheel to stay planted to the road instead of floating over the road imperfections.

What is delusional is to think liquid-cooling is a magical answer... a cure-all.

Buell motorcycles... You either get it or you don't.

I keep seeing things in this thread about the 600CC Japanese bikes. I'm quite certain that Buell has no interest in that market. Lets face it, the Buells are 'niche' bikes. Bike with a heck of a lot of character.

But WHAT IF Buell had the ability to produce a bike that COULD compete with a Ducati 999R, at 1/2 the price? Could any one fault them for doing so? Fuel in the frame, ZTL2, Underslung muffler, etc...

Lets face it, the air cooled motors that we love so much, just aren't going to see big HP #s and still pass EPA tests.

Don't get me wrong, I *LOVE* my buells. I'm quite content with my 96HP(at the wheel) S3T, and 75HP CityX. And I will most likely be purchasing a new SS, or Uly come January.

And quite honestly, my riding abilities don't require any more horse power at the moment : )

But lets face it, Buell looses potential sales because of that one tiny detail on that spec sheet.... Horsepower.

Do you think if you dropped the HP on the Japanese bikes that they would no longer require cats to pass EPA emission tests? The answer is no. They would still require them. It is a matter of combustion chamber design and efficiency. One feature that our engines have now and something Buell engineers are very good at. After combustion emission systems are a band-aid for inefficient fuel-burning... What is needed is the R&D to increase the durability of this engine to handle significantly increased HP and RPM for everyday use... R&D that is being done right now with the XBRR. Cooling is not a problem. Air-cooled they will be.

I think you're wrong Steve...

I'm not bashing... I just think you're incorrect.

Would a 1200cc IL4 producing 90RWHP require cats?

I think that Buell will be able to produce a 120-130RWHP air cooled engine that doesn't use a cat. Maybe even a 150RWHP engine that does? I don't know that either but I look forward to whatever they do as long as they keep the handling in the canyons : ).

steve you say that buell should build a bike to compete with the 999r well they did unfortunatly its not half the price though.

according to the buell web site in france a xbrr kicked a bunch of 999's 996's and aprillas butts. see:

That's not the first time it beat the Italians... They beat a 999 at Daytona as well. Granted... The Italians came up with some sort of cockamaimy excuse as to exactly why it happened...

They also beat some very inferior bikes in a support race but pulled off on the last lap so that they wouldn't take the trophies from the lower classes... One of those manufacturers than advertised that they had beaten the RR at Daytona...

The XBRR is no shit. The world knows it : ).

Yes, they built a race bike. And a DAMN good one at that IMHO.

But....

It isn't 1/2 the price.
it isn't street legal
It isn't EPA certified.
It's unobtainable without a current 'race' license.

no but it is about the same price and it does prove that it is posible and im sure that if and i do mean IF they do come out with a street going bike like that it would probly be a bit cheaper than the rr is and it would meet the epa standards. (though if they come out with that good of a bike it probly wont be quite as powerfull)

also something to consider how many people are going out and buing the 999r that arernt racing it? most people who get a 999 are getting the much cheaper 999s, or regular 999 so instead of a road going bike tring to compeate with the almost race ready 999r i think that they should try to hit closer to the ducs that u would actually see on the street.

With a water cooled motor you could see buell competing in the Superbike Class...

I really feel the XBRR is only tip of the ICEBERG..
