I found this while looking through their site. I think a lot of this info could be useful to some of us....er....all of us. There's two parts to the test. First an explanation of terms and the second a lab test. Part 1. http://www.sportrider.com/tech/146_0308_oil/ Part 2. http://www.sportrider.com/tech/146_0310_oil/ |

There is some evident disinformation going around the net that Mobil 1's automotive synthetics were "downgraded" to include Group 3 components after their lawsuit against Castrol was thrown out. From what I can find out, this is NOT true and all Mobil 1 synthetics including 15W-50 remain "true" Group 4 synthetics. |

Too bad they didn't include Harley-Davidson's oils in the test. I would really like to see how Harley's oils, especially Syn3, fare good or bad when analyzed and compared with the rest of the market. |

ME TOO! If there is enough interest, maybe we all could chip in and have the tests done? I'd chip in a $100 for that. |

You would find that Syn3 would perform surprisingly like what some call a "better oil" IMO b/c it doesn't say Harley on it. VROD forums guys seem to think that Mobil 1 is the ish... http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_V-Twin_20W-50.aspx Test the two side by side and you will see very, very similar results. I'd say identical if you are just looking at testing reports and not packaging. Josh |

Apart from the chemical analysis I wouldn't bother reading too much into the rest of part 2. Not providing the full suite of tests for each oil in the comparison is as good as not doing it at all in my opinion. HP of gains of about 2% are getting close to the realms statistical variation in the running conditions. |

Blake, I'd also like to see HD Syn-3 tested and compared to Mobil-1 V-Twin. If you can arrange that, I'd match your contribution. |

Before y'all go blowing money on an oil analysis, I suggest you search the forums at http://www.bobistheoilguy.com. There are very likely UOAs (Used Oil Analyses) posted for these oils in motorcycle usage. |

Amsoil has a whole bunch of tests on their site which includes Mobil 1 and Syn3. Their test show Mobil 1 to be the best off the shelf oil. |

I searched Bob's forum on Saturday and could not find used oil analysis on the HD Syn 3. None done yet. Oil analysis is not really that expensive. You can find the details on how to do it on Bob's site. I would love to see Syn3 tested against Red Line or M1. It is my opinion that Syn3 is a group 3 "almost syn" but without HD releasing any data on the oil or submitted it to API or JASO for testing, it is truly a "mystery oil." That is a lot of money to charge for a "trust me" oil IMHO. |
