As I was on my way to work this morning, everything seemed fine, then my bike acted like it went into neutral,i pulled off the highway to check it out, bike would not shift out of gear, but still acted like it was in neutral.Got the bike home on a trailer, started it up and i could move it,but it won't come out of 5th gear.Anyone have any ideas of something to try before I take it in to the shop,so it can be there for a month.

not unless you want to dig into the transmission. Sounds like a bad dog, the things that moves the gears back and forth.

It has happened to a customer at the dealership where I work. Same thing, but our service guys couldn't find anything. One of those intermittent problems that drive you crazy.

Pup, I don't know what it might be but I hope that it is a quick, easy, and cheap fix. Did you check the primary fluid, did it smell burned?

Mine smelled so bad when they pulled the cover, Cameron (SMHD&Buell's GM) called the Fire Dept. thinking there was a gas leak!

Will the stator cause it to not shit? or was there so much crud in the fluid that the clutch would slip that bad? Pup, how many miles are or your bike? I would just like to know for my personal knowlage vault of gearhead related info.

Yeah, it can cause it to shift poorly.
You may have other things going on as well.
When your stator goes out it gets really hot, cooking the oil, transmission gets no lube.
