Ok, so I had been mostly shopping for a xb9s or sx, but couldn't pass up this deal on a barely used 2006 xb12s. I haven't ridden a bike in about 5 years, and the last bike I road was an old CBR600. I hated that bike. Shifting constantly, no torque, too much forward lean. Anyway, after stalling the xb on the first takeoff, and then riding it for 20 seconds or so, I felt at home on this bike. I've been reading you guys rave about them for the past year or so, and now I know what you mean. I couldn't believe the torque, instant power in any gear, and overall driveability. My wife and kids went along with me and when I got back, my wife could just see the way I was sitting on the bike and new that I was in love. I still love her more of course, but man this is a close second.

Anyway, picking it up permanently on Wednesday, after the title gets transferred. And I'm registered for the Rider's Edge course next week also.

A few questions:

1) After about five minutes of riding, there was a veritable blow torch of heat coming out from under the seat on the right side. I was dumb enough to wear shorts for the test ride (which I will never do again), but not sure that pants would help much, especially on longer runs. The bike has the heat shield under the seat, but I assume that just keeps the boys from melting. Any hints on stopping that heat flow out the side into the inner thigh? I think my leg is going to blister from the heat.

2)My neighbor gave me an older Buell Vanson jacket that he used to use on his M2. Fits great, love it! I work an office job and will be commuting, so I would love to find some riding pants I could zip or velcro over my slacks, and just tear off real quick once I get to work. Anyone know if Vanson makes something like that? I searched the Buell site, but they don't seem to have the Vanson line anymore.

3) Anyone put a CityX bar on a regular Lightning? I assume it bolts right on, but am wondering if will bring me up a little more upright. Looking for comfortable riding position. I have horrible posture normally, so trying to do everything possible to keep from slouching too much.

Thanks for any input! Can't wait to RIDE!

Matt-The heat thing you get used to, once you have pants on it shouldn't be a problem. Granted you are not in a traffic jam and the fan comes on.

Overpants are readily available. Check with Daves @ Appleton HD/Buell. He is listed in the sponser section on this board. If he don't have it, he can point you to it!

The CityX bars will work fine. But I would suggest riding your bike a little while before forking over the money only to find that you want something drastically different(ie-crossraods, or renthal low bars)

As Kristi said, head to Carolina Corner Carvers and check us out. We will be in the Boone area the 1st weekend of OCT. Welcome to the madness. Congrats on the new ride.

Hi Matt,

Odie on this board owns Special OPS and makes underseat heatshields for our bikes. Check out his website, they are only $25. I hear they work great and mine is on the way. Also, once the bike is broken in, the heat will be less. A new bike is breaking in parts and the friction is greater.

Happy riding, and congrats on becoming a Bueller,

Hey, congrats on the S! Any covering at all will make a world of difference with your heat issue. I have always fully suited up when I ride, but one day I wore a different kind of socks... low ankle socks. Even that far down the bike, I nearly scorched my leg! I'd never even noticed heat down there before. So yeah, just cover up, and you'll be fine.

Yeah, it gets kinda toasty back there. You should try being stuck in traffic in Florida. It gets really warm on the seat. Wear long pants.
Someone gave you a Vanson jacket? That's some good friend you have. They're among the most expensive motorcycle jackets you can buy. I own one myself. Of course, they're worth it.
