I think that would be a theoretical top speed, judging by the sprocket sizes he quotes! In fact it would give a theoretical top speed of 166mph. The problem is that this bike would not have the power to pull that kind of speed with just the mods he has listed, and acceleration would be slow. It isn't entirely clear from the photo which chain kit he is using, although if it is one of the Free Spirits/Adrenalin-Moto kits the adjustable tensioner looks to be extended much further than normal. We recommend a SMALLEST rear sprocket size of 47T with our chain kits in order to avoid the chain hitting the swingarm and to avoid a large distortion in the chain with the tensioner wheel. We run a 21/49 setup at most circuits and this gives us a very achieveable 146mph top end and good acceleration as well. For road use I would think that this would be a better ratio to run. You can change the gearing to whatever you want with a chain kit, so 160 is easily reachable. I'm surprised to hear that you don't think our bikes will motor right up to that top speed Trojan. From my experience my bike pulls right up to the rev limiter with stock gearing, so I figured it would still do pretty well to only be adding 15 mph or so. I know the Buell isn't a 180 plus bike no matter what the gearing, but I thought 165 to 170 wouldn't be a problem with proper gearing. | ||

A stock XB12 would struggle to reach 160 even if you change the gearing. The problem is that you can gear it to go at any theoretical speed you like, but it probably won't have the ooomph to get there. Remember that you will also have to be able to use the lower 4 gears, and if you gear it too high you'll need a tow to start! Adding 15mph to a bikes top speed is not an easy proposition, as the faster you go the more drag you have to fight etc. Take a look at the bodywork on the XBRR or RR10000 to see what is needed for high speeds in addition to power. | ||

I agree with this, but of course, I don't have the years of extensive research and development and experience racing and modifying Buells that Trojan has. | ||

We use a chain simply to give us a much broader range of gearing options for different circuits etc. It is also much easier to replace a broken chain at the track than to try and find a dealer in the vicinity with a belt in stock (been there and done that) Gearing is always a compromise between top speed, acceleration and useable power, and we will almost always go for the option that gives us the best drive out of corners and mid range rather than just top speed. | ||

looks like one of ours from Racing Motor.  It's carbon fibre and uses an LED tail light unit. Price is steep at GBP500 (US$900 approx) which is why they are no longer on our web site. If the US$300 quoted for the undertail on ebay is correct then it may be a plastic copy? We can still get them though if you really must have one  (Message edited by trojan on August 10, 2006) | ||

That bike is ripe for a Turbo! It would pull to 166 no problems then... Have you seen the vid of Eric Z's dyno pull...it hits 140 like it's in 3rd gear! TK | ||

Chain drive is THE most energy efficient means to transfer power between non-coaxial shafts yet devised. jack up the belt drive bike, give the wheel a vigorous spin, and tne watch it come to rest after a revolution and a half. now go jack up a chain drive bike, give the rear wheel a good spin..... then report back. | ||

It's there, right above the rear mufler strap you'll see the heim type adjuster rod of what apears to be the freespirits tensioner. look up and to the left and you'll see a black colored triangular plate. the idler gear is behind that. P.S. in another thread on this board you said: "Close to the same price if I buy the chain I wanted." What brand/type chain are you looking for and what price have you received? Now I see it, that looks a little diff than the Free Spirits I believe. Anywho, more info on the "sway my decision" post please. A good o-ring gold chain seems to run around 130, back vortex sprocket (black) around $70, front sportser sprocket $30 and idler changes around $30. That all comes out pretty close to my other prefered belt combo of "trojon idler" for $140 and new 06 belt for $140. | ||
