Was the garage closed/locked? If not, was the bike secured in any way?

Generally, IMO, a big-ass chain secured to something solid will deter all but the most determined thief.

A great security system is a Remington 870 12-gauge shotgun loaded with buckshot. It would work nice on criminals. An NRA life member sticker is also a good deterrent. Criminals prefer unarmed citizens ... they make safer victims.

muddy oxide red paint splattered and dried on the floor, a couple of spent 12ga shell casings laying on the floor near the door, some wadded up Police line yellow "do not cross" tape thrown in the corner by the garage door, and a medium sized hand written sign hanging from the bike rack reading: "Me : 1, Thief : 0" .

Apart from that use the Kryptonite NYC chain and lock, along with a huge cable and round lock, both secured to something secure if it's a publically accessible open type garage area. You can't stop thieves, but you can slow them down or help them decide to look for easier pickings. A 40 pound bike can use a 1 pound lock, but a 15 pound bike requires a 40 pound lock.

Is there a reason you can't keep the bicycle inside your residence?

I thought you were refering to a motorcycle.

IMO, having a home security system in this case would be best. Not only will it protect your and your family, but you can put a motion sensor in the garage so that if someone wants to steal anything from it, it will go off.

I am currently building a home and one of the first things we are doing is installing a security system. I am going to have it not only cover the doors of the house, but the garage and basement too. Some say that the alarm will sound once they hit a hallway upstairs and not to worry about the basement, but it's the easiest way in and they are far too deep in the house at that point for my comfort levels.

My garage door is within 30 feet of the street, and the door is perpendicular.
If I'm not in the garage; the door is closed. When I'm not at home, the door is closed and the power cut to the electric opener.
Out of sight; out of mind.
