I have 6500 miles on my XB12 and my front pads are pretty much done for. I use probably 85% front brake/15% rear in the majority of my riding. Is this the usual pad life? Seems pretty short to me. I am going to get a set of the Lyndall Gold pads, I heard they wear even faster.  | ||

I just changed my fronts after 15,000km but once I got the old ones off I realized they weren't even as worn as I thought. So yes, that seems like a short life to me. | ||

On my XB9R I got 16000 miles on my original front pads and have since gone through 1 set of LRB gold pads and I am about done with my second set of LRB's I will start my third set of LRB's this weekend. I have 37000 miles now. I am also on my second set of LRB's on the rear which I recently replaced. | ||

6.5k is pretty good for the OEM pads. I changed mine for EBCs at about 4k and I've just swapped them for another set at 10k. The pads were only half-worn but the feel at the lever had gone off a little. | ||

Pad life obviously depends very much on what kind of riding you do. We have used up a set of pads on the stock disc in one day at a race meeting! After a year or so you would be advised to change the brake fluid in addition to the pads. We use R-600 fluid which has a much higher boiling point than standard dot 4 and keeps lever pressure high even in race use. There are plenty of very good fluids around now that are better than the standard stuff so i is worth shopping around for a 'super dot-4' or race fluid. You'll notice the diffeence immediately. The stock pads also leave a residue on the disc that will clean off with wire wool and brake cleaner and will reduce juddering. Be wary of using 'race spec' brake pads on the road, as these are very hard compound and need a lot of heat in them before they work properly. We use SBS dual carbon pads in our race bike and they are rubbish when cold, but after a few applications are absolutely superb. Could catch you out if you just nip to the shops though  Braking sintered pads are excellent for road use. | ||

I have EBC sintered pads and they last about 7,500 miles of hard canyon and mountain riding. Then again I only use my rear brake.  | ||

My first set was gone after 5000miles, this set may not last that long... I have no idea why they last so little... maybe the stop and go traffic? As I no longer have the chance to go up to the canyons that often.... |
