run higher octane gas, that will cut it down. I have the race kit, and even running 93 octane I still get a tiny bit in mine. |

Get your ecm remapped for the open airbox. Mine was popping and snapping and backfiring until I went back to the stock airbox with the factory race kit. Al at American Sport Bike does it, and I think other sponsors may as well.

CHECK your exhaust flanges. If you have a flange nut coming loose or a busted stud, it'll do it too. |

yeah, what Slaughter said, the seal where the header meets the pipe. That can cause popping but not backfiring though.

Pwnzor does make a good point. It is not a true backfiring when the exhaust leaks by the port like that. True backfire is kinda rare in most FI systems when the ECM senses a closed throttle, the fuel is shut off. Carbs still suck some gas into the system. The Popping, I've experienced and when I've pulled in, have always found that I broke a stud, had a nut back off or something. (Message edited by slaughter on August 08, 2006) |

when I had the open airbox I had apparently random incidents of backfiring. Each time the circumstances were different, but the one thing that was the same was... the open airbox. Since I have switched back, about 2 months ago, it has not backfired once, and my decel popping gradually disappeared. Honestly I didn't really notice a power increase by opening the airbox, and the bike seemed to run a lot hotter too. Also it was giving me a headache listening to the intake noise. I sort of liked the noise at first but I quickly tired of it.

My 03 XB9R backfires on decel since the race kit was installed a year ago. I assumed it was normal. Had it at the dealer to reset the TPS, they called me and said it needed intake seals. It didn't make any difference, still backfires. Unless somebody knows for sure, I'll assume it's a matter of the way the fuel map is set up for decel? Just curious, do you notice a huge flat spot between 4000 and 5000 RPM? |

Just curious, do you notice a huge flat spot between 4000 and 5000 RPM? Ricochet, you must have the pro series ecm, air filter, and exhaust? I have complained to the Dealer about the same problem. The mechanic who also has the xb9 said that it is normal. However, if modify your exhaust, you can change that. It's the way the pipe is set up. Apparently, no matter what pipe you have, it will flatten out slightly at 4 grand, but will pick up at 4500. I am trading my pro series for a Drummer. I don't care if its louder. The consensus is that its the best set up. Also, my bike pops constantly. |

Mine back fires, but I didn't worry about it until it stalled twice the other day. It hasn't stalled since though. |

I had a cut up air box too and had some issues here lately. I also went back to the closed box and my popping and pinging stopped, my bike feels just as strong. |
