In the shop manual it looks like you push down, reference point bottom of primary chain. Push up hard, measure top of chain. Or is it push down, reference point, push up hard measure to bottom of chain again. A lot of posting on this forum never tell their measuring points. they just measure what? Considering the chain is 3/8 thick, it makes a big difference. Help? | ||

This is something that I've found to be the biggest pain to perform.....I have yet to find a full proof way of getting mine measured without any guess work. | ||

I think a lot of people here define vertical free play different than the manual. I think it should be bottom of chain to top. it only moves 3/4 of an inch. If you go bottom then push up, to bottom the top part of the chain is hanging outside the 3/4 measurement. Look at the manual. the chain should be inside the measurement. | ||

for those of you in the know: is 'hard' the operative word??? Lite force gives one measurement hard (heavy) force gives another. Which one is it??? | ||

You think? Hmmm... Stick with the manual. You don't want a primary chain that's too tight. VERY bad things happen. Use the bottom/bottom method as it's easy to push up "hard" and make a reference, then push down hard and make a reference. A lot too loose is a LOT better than a little too tight. The manual states a cold measurement and a hot measurement. I generally adjust to a little looser than the cold measurement and I ONLY adjust the tension after the bike has been sitting overnight. The sprocket and clutch basket expand when hot, so I want them as cool as possible, then I set it on the loose side. Also... There will be a tight spot. Adjust at that spot. I generally put the bike in fifth and roll it forwards (I never roll an engine backwards, it's bad luck) until I find the tight spot. 3/4" is not mentioned in the manual as I recall. | ||

M1combat. The manual says 3/8-1/2inch cold. So you go bottom to bottom 1/2 inch. which is effectively the same as bottom to top 3/4. Its the same amount of travel just different references points? | ||

Choose any point on the chain - top edge, lower edge, pin, whatever. Move the chain up and down as far as it will go - you won't break it. Adjust until your reference point moves 3/8 - 1/2 inch cold. Repeat at various intervals along the chain.  Slightly slack is good, but for the improvements in shifting and general rev-tastic feeling from the engine, it's worth taking the time to get it perfect. |
