I was just reading an article in MCN, with the Speed Triple vs. the Buell xb12. Mainenance free hydraulic lifters were noted for the Buell, while the triple needed valves adjusted every 6,000 miles. The Buell has 2,500 mile service intervals, however, or so the article stated. Why so often? I'd like to buy an 07 Buell Lightning Long, and I'm just wondering what is done at these service intervals.

I think the 2500, 7500, etc. is pretty much an oil change. The big ones are the 5000 and 10000 and so on.

Actually, in 2004 the service intervals changed. First service is at 1,000 miles, then at each 5,000 mile interval after that (if you use H-D oil). The big service is the 10,000 mile service, it's an all day kind of deal, checking the entire chassis, replacing fork oil, replacing all fluids, many more things. The 5,000 mile services get you new fluids in your crankcase & trans/primary, adjust clutch & cables, primary chain, critical fasteners, etc. All dealers do servicing a bit differently, but if you follow what the FSM recommends, you'll have no problems.

All things considered, I think Buell has the lowest scheduled maintenance costs out there.

The only thing different between the 5k and a 10k is the front fork oil change.
