Hi

I have medical with my work place. I also pay it on my motorcycle insurance. Is this redundant since only one will pay out as the primary?

Yeah it's on any basic liability even the most basic you can get. That's why you have to have insurance in the first place and such. Plus having that covers both your asses, even with medical insurance through work.

What type of limits on the motorcycle policy should one get if they also have medical coverage at work? Can it be less? I'm paying about $200 a month for insurance from Progressive which includes every option they offer.

Anyone who has major surgery from a bike wipeout? Would luv to get your perspective on things. Did you have coverage? Was it enough?

Damn, I was paying $360 a year for basic liability. You can go down on your medical insurance but theres only a certain amount that you can go down.

You have to call your work place insurance company and ask them. If you work place insurance considers motorcycles as recreational it might be possible that they will not cover anything? I called and spent about an 15mins speaking with my work insurance just to make sure I was covered.

Very good point. This is the second time I've heard about 'recreational use' loop hole to screw the consumer.

If you have health insurance through work, that covers emergency room care and hospitalization, then it will cover your medical in an accident..period. It's probably redundant to have it on your bike insurance, but I would check to see how much that part of the insurance actually costs...I'm guessing it doesn't make up a large portion of the monthly rate.

I very specifically asked at work when we went through our annual selection:

1 - will I be covered in motorcycle road racing?

2 - will I be covered in Scuba-related injuries

3 - will I be covered in sport flying-related injuries?

4 - will I need pre-approvals

I got to test it a year and a half ago in my gnarly high-side at Willow Springs. Posted details elsewhere a year ago.

I had to get a bunch of specialists - neurologist, orthopedic trauma specialist, physical therapist. I had to pay out of pocket for services rendered which exceeded the book-value of typical costs BUT was grateful that I could chose my OWN doctors/specialists and NEVER had to wait for treatment or to schedule laboratory work.

I carry supplemental insurance for Scuba because my insurance WON'T cover expenses out of country.

After all the deductibles, I still had to cover about $20K BUT I chose to do so, knowing I'd be getting the best of care possible in CA. That was a decision made when I started racing.

That weekend cost over $100K by the time all was said and done.

Motorist Insurance isn't just for you, it's the amount of medical it will pay to any passengers and to anyone you hit. Medical can deny to pay certain things if you don't have full coverage on your motorcycle and having the insurance can cover any loose ends there may be.

Sort of like my wife's insurance for work. She is covered at work for potentially being sued, but she also has her own insurance specifically designed so that if the work's insurance somehow fails, she has her own to protect her.

Hey

Thanks for all the info so far. I'm learning alot.

Here my specifics (below). Thoughts?
I got my wires crossed. I pay $393 annually.

-B.I. 50K person/100K each accident @$72 ( annual cost)

-Prop. Dam. 25K each accident @ $26
-Uninsured-Stacked 10K person / 20K acc. @ $225
-Custom Parts up to 1k (included cost)
-Roadside Assistance $8

Also with progressive my auto and bike stack on top of each other (so I'm told by the agent. They say that is good but I don't really know what it means).

Holey Moley, $20K in medical deductables?

You others that had visits to the ER, did you pay this much too?

Slaughter. Do you still have pain and if so do you still have to take pills for it? The wipe out does scare me as much as the thought of long term pain.

Isn't is great how your uninsured motorist coverage is the most expensive part? It's a shame that there are so many people out there that are under insured/uninsured on the road.

The deductibles were $2K - the additional expenses were my choice of doctors where I had to cover costs over and above the insurance. My ortho surgeon (Donals Wiss) is one of 3 that teach orthopedic trauma surgery in CA (USC). He worked with the PT to arrange a program to work back to "normal" for the activities I wanted to get back to doing (motorcycles, diving/swimming, running)

No long term effects. The first 6 months was tough getting back the range of motion and then it was all just very specific exercises that the physical therapist setup for me.

No long lasting neurological issues.

By the way, from what I've heard, your driving type insurance really doesn't cover you in the way that medical does. Never had a claim after an accident on the street though so can't help there.

My Dairyland (Sentry) insurance does not cover my medical in the event of an accident - I broke my collar bone when I dumped it in '04. My employer health insurance required me to provide them with a statement from my motorcycle insurance that I was not covered for medical before they would pay it. However my motorcycle insurance DOES include passenger medical coverage.

If you have two coverages they will "coordinate" benefits. If you have deductibles on your basic medical plan (most have them) the PIP on your bike coverage will fill them in, saving you money.

I would buy the PIP, it is cheap.
