Hi

I don't race my Buell and I am think about putting 89 octane in the bike for mornings/cold day easy starts.

The lower octanes ignite quicker ( which is bad for racing) so I'm thinking it will aid starting when cold out. Lately I my bike has been starting with only 1 cyclinder going until it warms up. I think switch from 91 to 89 will do just the trick. Or maybe every other fill up go with 89 and then 91 so I get a blend around 90 octane ( I usually fill up after 65 miles on the trip meter.

Has anyone had trouble with 89 octane and pinging?

No. don't do it has to slow of burn.Min 91 octane

Actually 89 burns faster, that's why it pings.

The higher octane fuels burn at a higher temp and don't pre-ignite as easily.

In cooler weather you may be able to get away with 89, but in the summer I don't advise it.

It sounds like your front cylinder is fouling it's plug. Lower octane won't cure that.

try replacing the front plug, and resisting the urge to "blip" the throttle, especially when the engine is cold.

Cold starting problems can also be a early timing problem. If you are pinging during this heat then you can kill two birds with one stone........retard 3 degrees.

I tried half a tank with half and half ( 91 + 89 ) octane.

Now when I start the bike cold the engine just purs.

Change your spark plugs and/or wires.

There is no place in Florida that is too cold to start your bike regardless of octane. Fuel doesn't choose where to combust. You mix it with air and inject it into a compression chamber, add a spark and it fires. One of those things is missing, intermittently in your engine. Temperature in your case I believe is irrelevant.

I have the 15k tune up coming around the corner.

Anyone know if this be included? If not I might as well upgrade the wires to something better ( or are the stock wire already pretty good )? What are good wires to ask for?

I've notice that on mornings when I rise the air temp is about 73 and high humidity. It is only the mornings I have any issue...never see the problem in the afternoon or evenings.

The title of this thread is VERY mis-leading - 89 octane is NOT better for cold starts.

Has anyone, seen anywhere, in any Buell manual that you should use a LOWER octane fuel for cold weather ???

As mush mis-information as is already floating around here, the last thing we need are "rumors" about which octane to use.

Read the appropriate Buell manual, it clearly states which fuel to use.

I think the cold start issue is related to excessive initial spark advance and possibly a low TPS/RPM #s. The idle less than 1050 with excessive stock initial static timing makes for a tough starting combination. The engine is kicking back on itself and the throttle plate might not be letting enough air by. I had the same problem last winter on cold days.

Min 91 octane(95 ron).Were does running run 89 in buell come from? Or Any performance machine.

I know my Blast has a carb, but when new I ran 93 because here in Florida 91 isn't really available and it ran poor to me, I went to 89 and it ran better, I found Citgo had 91 (recommended) and it ran ok, lately I have gone to 87 for about 6 tanks and noticed no difference, never had pinging at with any fuels. I have never noticed any difference between cold starts, even below 73 : )
