Stator failure at 24K using M1 75-90 GL. Switched to Amsoil 75-90 and it feels about the same when shifting. I'll go to Amsoil 20/50 next time and stay there.

"Remember that 10W-40 is the standard lube for most Japanese bikes which share the lube between the engine and transmission and it works fine there. Lots of autos run ATF in their manual transmissions, which is an even lighter lube"

Well, these guys have to make a compromise. They HAVE to pick one oil that can do both jobs and I can't see them sacrficing the engine to optimize the trans.

Besides, Buell says, use the 20W-50 so how hard is this to figure out?

Man, I don't mean to be contentious about this but a similar argument can be made for Harley. They've elected to develop one synthetic lube that can be used in both places so they may have compromised on their recommendations. They're not gonna tell you to use 10W-40 synth in the tranny if they don't make it.

Mobil makes 20W-50 lube which they do recommend for Harleys with separate primary/transmissions. Since they make both 10W-40 and 20W-50 synthetic motorcycle lubricants, and both are suitable for transmissions, wouldn't you think they'd recommend what they know works best?

Lots of people (myself included at times) are perfectly willing to believe that Mobil knows what they're doing as far as developing some of the best synthetic lubricants in the world. OTOH, we turn right around and say "They said what? Ahh, those bozos don't know what they're talking about." Go figure.

No I wouldn't. Do you think Mobil tests their oil in every bike and car in the world?

No, they don't. Do you think Buell tests oils in their own bikes sufficently to know which ones are optimal?

I think they do.

Personally, I do accept the viscosity recs of the company that made the engine and trans.

Hey, that's just me.

Hey guys. Pretty new here. Just put M1 75 90 gear lube synthetic with "limited slip" additives. I'm about to ride about 700 miles from New Mexico to Fort Worth.

You guys think this primary lube is good for now? Change to amzoil or non syn next change??

Oh and I'm riding a 2000 Buell M2 with about 17k miles. And as far as I know this is the first primary change : ( the bike was my dads. He has owned it since 2005 and said he never changed it.
