I know the exhaust threads hae been done to death but I simply can't find an answer to my questions in any of the previous threads.
I am getting an original Drummer for my bone stock 06' XB9R (no mods to the airbox, standard air filter, stock ECM). After speaking with Kevin he assured me that all would be well and a dangerously lean condition would not be caused due to the new can.
Since talking with him I have had several people tell me that it is a recipe for disaster. I would like to hear from other who are running a stock setup with just the Drummer to see what their experience has been. I would especially like to see a dyno showing the fuel/air ratio with this setup.
I know someone that runs the Drummer with a race ECM and the dyno showed it still had a lean curve in the mid 3000 rpm range. This leads me to believe that the solution is a remap from American Sportbike but that is beyond my financial means for at least 6 months.
Please add what input you can since I am stressing badly over this.
How can a simple muffler change cause such drastic A/F changes without modifying the intake side? The way I see it you are simply allowing gasses to escape easier without adding extra air which would causea lean condition. What am I missing?
I would like to add that Kevin truly sounded like he knew his business but the other reports are freakin' me out here!!

Hey Jackie, I was not trying to freak you out. As you noted, even with the race ECM it's a "one size fits none" except a
single very specific set-up, race kit, and even then, it's not perfect.


Due to EPA regulations the bikes run pretty lean as they are delivered from the factory. When you open up the air flow into
the engine, out of it, or both the ECM has a limited range of adaptation that will allow the fuel to keep up with the added
air. If it cannot match the increase in volume the ratio gets leaner.

This simplifies some rather complex inter-relationships between the ECM and sensors, but hopefully it helps you understand it
without your eyes glazing over while I talk about open and closed loop operation, injector size, duration of signals and
o2 sensor and airbox temp sensor inputs, air density, etc etc.



I'll stop now before I run off at the mouth..err..keyboard any more.

Thanks for the input!
So in your opinion what is the solution? Is running the Drummer with no other mods going to cause harm? I know Al can flash an ECM with a very precise MAP but I can't afford it now or in the near future.
What about running the Drummer with a race ECM without the high flow air filter. Wouldn't this cause more fuel to be dispensed while restricting the airflow and in turn reduce the chances of a lean condition?
I am well and truly concerned considering my bike is new and the last thing I want to do is damage it.

I think Kevin said, on the other thread, that the race ECM is what is primarily used with the Drummer.

I wouldn't worry about going dangerously lean if you use a race ECM, even with the K&N, but I'd probably keep the air box
stock until you're ready to go over to Direct Link. But your own experience has shown you that ;)

AHHH! Therein lies the problem. I have a friend who has the race ECM and the Drummer and the dyno showed lean between 3000 and 3500 rpm.
This whole thing has me wondering if the benefits outweigh the risks of engine damage.
Shame the stock can sounds like doo doo!!

ok, nobody answered his question. Stock airbox, stock filter, drummer. Lean? to the point of danger? Are people letting the stock ecm have enough time to learn the new ratio?
You couldn't pay me enough to use a K&N high air flow filter. They let in so much grit. My ducati 900ss had sand in the air box!!

OK - Here's the definitive answer straight from Kevin. Stock airbox, stock filter, Drummer - the stock ECM is just fine. Ride it & don't worry.

I just got the call from Kevin and the Drummer is on its' way. Hopefully I'll get it by the weekend so I can give it a try.
Pretty excited since the guy I ride with has one and it draws attention like a mutha! Hate to be vain but I like it when people stare or ask "why does your bike sound like a Harley". Kinda makes me feel young and cool again !!
