I was hoping I could find an experienced Bueller in the North Jersey area to help me put my mind at ease regarding some issues with my bike. I have been perplexed by some really annoying noises and minor issues for a while now, especially the past month. The bike seems to not be running as good, gas mileage around 33 MPG, and some louder than normal clanking and rattling. When I recently had in in for a service, I was told that it is fine but I'm pretty certain that some things are off.
Yesterday I was going for a jog and I saw a guy on a Firebolt go by, so I flagged him down to check it out. I listened closely to his engine at idle (an 05' with 2300 miles) and there was none of the clanking and metallic sqeaking/chirping that I hear on my bike (06 XB9SX with 2900 miles). Clicking, tapping and noisy...yes, but definitely noticeably missing some of the odd noises I hear on my bike. I guess I'm just frustrated because I have noticed the changes in my bike, yet can't get someone to validate my concerns after having two dealers check it out. "Moose" at Liberty HD/Buell was great, but I would love to get some other insights as well. I live in Nutley NJ, if there are any experienced Buellers that would be willing to help me with my concerns, it would really help to alleviate some of my frustration. Thanks.

What did Moose have to say?

Moose said that he thought things were OK. However, everything is relative and I can understand the concept of not wanting to have to diagnose a problem so long as a bike is running. I suppose I would just like to get some sort of comparison, or confirmation from another XB rider, considering I haven't ridden another Buell. I guess ultimately, I have noticed changes and that is what has made me wary.

My first inclination was that your primary crankshaft sprocket was loose as I had similar noise symptoms. I took it to Liberty and Moose diagnosed & fixed it immediately.

Court, Steve, here is the deal so far:
Moose said that compensation nut was OK. Ultimately, I guess after hearing another XB engine in relation to mine, it has raised more questions as to where certain noises are coming from and why my bike seems to be running so-so. I know that these engines are noisy whereas I have ridden Harley's before, it just seems that I have had reason to question things, since there have been dealer issues from the start. Ex: when I picked up my bike new, Oil was overfilled and oil cooler fitting leaked. After 1000 mile service, primary chain was overtightened and service tech was not able to tell me what the obvious metallic chirping/rattling sound when accelerating was. After bringing bike to another dealer, when they drained the oil, they said it was way low on oil and that chunks of charred oil came out. Yet I had checked the oil within 80-100 miles before bringing it in and the level was within operating range. Furthermore, the oil was switched to Syn3 and way overfilled by tech.
The main thing that has pissed me off is that nobody who works in service seems to be able to hear this chirping/rattling sound. If it is normal, so be it, just tell me where it is coming from!! My brother rides Harley's and was a bike mechanic and he noticed the noise as well. Since having some questionable service done at two different dealers, I am wondering if something was damaged. Perhaps my primary chain needs adjustment? However, supposedly it was checked and is fine. I do trust Moose over at Liberty, and he seems to actually care, but I am simply frustrated and want to get some non-dealer related opinions.

Hey Joe,

If you are still hearing the noise, bring it by and we'll take another look at it. Everything checked out OK last time you brought it in, but I want to make sure we track down what you're hearing. If I remember from when you described the noise, it was happening after the bike warmed up, right?

Let me know, and I'll let the guys at the service desk know to expect your call so we can get you in ASAP.

Hey Moose, I will check in with you at Liberty again (thanks for the follow-up). After I picked up the bike, it seemed to be ok, but after riding a bit it just seems to be lagging a little in the lower-mid revs. I'm sure that some of the noise I'm hearing is characteristic, but because performance seems to have dropped a little, I am a little concerned. Plus, I seem to be averaging only 30-35 MPG. Doesn't that seem low? As far as the metallic chirping/rattle, if someone could point out to me what it is (if it's normal), it would ease my concern.

Chris:

My bike is making no noises and I'm a generally happy person.

Even if I have no problems, can I stop my to just hang out anyway?

Court

P.S. - Do you have the BUELL RACING decals and patches in stock? I feel a shopping trip tomorrow.

Joe:

Just as a "heads up", the Liberty folks have a GREAT reputation for excellent service and follow up.

The problem is that they listen to a lot of really loud rock music.

Take it back and let them listen to it again....shaem not everyone is the embodiment of healthy living like I am.

: )

Not likely to happen. . . too much going on in the world of Buell that day with 3,000 bikes descending from Ledgewood, NJ on Times Square, the big gig at the Hard Rock Cafe' and general chicanery associated with all of it.

It's going to be a wild weekend.

Court, you're too much! I know we have the patches, not sure about the racing deacals.

Also, got my lifts cleared off from the last race rebuild : ) It's safe to walk around my area again!

Joe, we'll check out the motor as much as you would like. It could be something as simple as bad spark plug, timing may be off a bit, stuff like that. My experience with completely unmodified XBs is that if something is off, it's usually not a huge deal to remedy. Give Tim or Gary at the service desk a call, and I'll let them know today about your concerns too.

Chris
