So I left work yesterday about 6:00, and as I went to ride a wheely by some kids on GSXRs with shorts on I felt something slip. The wheely felt really awkward and I immediately backed off the throttle. As soon as the next good tooth caught grip it brought the front end right back up even though I was off the throttle. Thankfully being off the throttle was enough to keep me from looping the bike! So I had a pretty good idea of what had happened, so I just rode the rest of the 20 miles home hopping it didn't snap completely. I made it home and when I inspected the belt I found about 2-3 inches of teeth missing. I've only had that belt for about 10 months and 5,000 miles! I'm going to call the dealership that replaced my 04 belt at 7,500 miles under warranty with this one and see if they can help me again. I'll post some pics of the belt once I pull it off the bike, and let everyone know if it gets replaced under warranty.

Believe me you are not the first.

My first one broke at 7700 miles. It broke when I did a second gear wheelie.

I take it a little easier on my '06 Uly than I do on my chain driven bikes.

IMO, the weight, torque, and stout clutch is a little more than the belt can handle. It is the only major beef I have with my Uly.

Take it easy in not in my vocabulary! I paid all of this money for my brand new 04 12R back in July of 04 so that I could ride the piss out of it! If I thought I was going to need to baby the thing I would have bought something else! The belt really is the only complaint that I have about the bike as far as reliability goes. Other than that belt I've only had very minor problems with the bike that are expected with any bike that you put 12,500 miles on in two years (10,500 since last May). I would love to throw a chain drive on my 12, but I don't want to dump that kind of coin right now. It would be really nice to have the ability to change the gearing and not worry about the belt breaking, but it isn't cheap by any means.

Some people tell me that I've overeacted by not flogging to my hearts content for fear of belt issues.

I am often hundreds of miles from home carrying 90lbs of gear. It's very hard to hold back sometimes because I'm afraid of being stranded a long way from help.

I definetly would prefer a chain. Cost, retrofitting and warranty issues keep me from doing it now.

BTW, when I'm close to home I tend to engage in occassional hooligan antics, and so far my third '06 belt is still holding up. Breakage and embedded stones keep them from lasting me no more than about 8k miles.

Saintly put together a chain conversion for less than the cost of a new belt, or so he says. I believe it:-)

Seems like most hooligans are going to be happier without a rubberband powered scooter.

I know am I.

Hey Jon, is Saintly selling them or did he post up what he used? If I can't get this thing fixed under warranty I would much rather change to a chain! It seems to me that the only real issues are finding the correct sprocket sizes and the idler pulley. Other than that there really isn't anything to complicated that I can think of. Can you post up a thread or something Jon? Thanks!

Olin.. we are working on something for those who want a cheap alternative to the big dollar conversions. I will be seeing Sint tonite and will have him post the parts list for you if you havent found it by then.

Saintly had posted his parts list.

If you find his original parts list to be advised there are better chains on the market.
He listed a cheap chain to keep the over-all cost down.
I'd upgrade to a better o/x-ring style chain. : )

Olin, PM me if you're interested in the chain conversion. I've sold a few of them now and I can make you a smoking deal on everything you'll need to convert.

I have an 04 with 16k miles, ridden the piss out of it, on one wheel and two, and my belt still shows little signs of wear.

We managed to break an 06 belt in 600 miles on our race bike. The belt didn't break but delaminated and stripped all it's teeth from the inside, leaving the outer casing pristine.
I know ours was a race bike but it isn't hugely powerful (103bhp at the rear wheel).
I sent the belt back to Buell UK for examination straight away, but so far have not even had an acknowledgement that they have even receieved it or will look into the matter. That was on 15th May and we are still waiting.
Funnily enough, when we scored a third place earlier in the year they were on the phone the next day asking for a report to put on the Buell UK web site.

I have no complaint with the Buell factory standard of service, but Buell UK are another matter and need a kick up the arse when it comes to customer service!

Topeka HD is coming through for me once again! I can't say enough good things about that dealership. They are the only HD/Buell dealership that I've ever been to that actually has interest in Buell and wants to help their owners.

So my manufacturer warranty is up by a couple days, but they are going to fix it under my extended warranty. Apparently they have some sort of discreationary amount that they can claim warranty work against in special cases and they are going to use some of it for me. I just have to pay the $50 deductible and get the bike to Topeka which is about an hour away. I'm trying to bribe one of my friends to let me load the bike up in their truck and drive me down there. We'll see how that goes.

How long after some teeth are ate do you have before the belt actually breaks? I know it isn't ideal, but I'm thinking if nobody can take me I can probably make it down there if I'm easy on it. Thoughts?
