I am looking at a XB9R, the only reason is that the local honda dealer has one, and I have a quad to trade in on it. Question is, I know I can put S footpegs on it an get the pegs an inch lower, but does that make the foot/leg position the same as a S? The bars I know how to correct. My heart tells me to just hold out on a lightning, but if all it takes are some spiegler bars and S pegs to get the same riding position, then I might get the firebolt. Are there other differences besides the clip-ons and pegs that make the riding position different?

The pegs will make the riding position the same as an "S" model for your feet and legs. I went with the Heli triple clamp for more comfort on the wrists. It's still not as upright as the Lightning, but comfortable.

Adding the Buell Deluxe Seat to the R will add about another inch of leg room, and significantly reduce "butt polio".

At 6'1" I put the S pegs on for more comfort. I didn't notice how much of a difference it made until I rode a stock R last year. The seat shape is slightly different, I would recommend a thicker seat as well.

As for bars, it's whatever is comfortable for the reach. I didn't like the S bars, I felt they were too high...but there are options to raise the position of the bars on the R, so it can be done quickly and easily...

And personally, I love the look of the R better.

My heart tells me to just hold out on a lightning,

I think you should wait & try out a lightning first to be sure.
Riding each of these models will make your choice much easier.

On edit: call around & find out if any dealers within a reasonable distance have any Firebolts & Lightnings that you can demo.
