I have a 2005 xb9sx with a Drummer and open airbox with a K&n. Do I need a race ECM for this setup or is stock OK? I have had no problems with the open airbox, however I have read some threads saying that it will run to lean causing poor gas mileage and driveablilty problems. Like I said I have not experienced this however. Some input please, thanks.

Yes, you do need the race ECM if you are going to run the open airbox.

can the stock ECM be reprogrammed, or does it need to be replaced?

Will the dealer do the reprogramming (if it can me done without a replacement) and what is the average cost?

Does anyone have a race ECM they want to sell for my xb9sx?

Coastie,

reprogramming is done via a software package called Direct Link.

DaveS, American Sport Bike nd other sponsors here sell it. They have maps made for common
configurations, but to have it perfect requires dyno tuning by someone with
both Buell and Direct Link experience, and not every dealership does.

The Race ECM will work, but it is not adjustable, and not perfect for the
Drummer. It was designed for the factory race pipe. It is cheaper though.

Thanks Diablobrian,
Can the OEM ECM be reprogrammed, or does a 3rd party programmable ECM need to be installed.

I test drove a XB9S earlier this week, and an considering a XB12S in the near future.

The OEM stock ECM can be re-mapped, with no difference in performance than if the same map was programmed into a race ECM. The algorithms are not changed, just the Fuel, Spark, Accel, and Decel map tables.
