The low beam headlight lens on my XB9S has melted. 4000 miles, original bulb.
The dealer, Cerini HD, submitted a, so called, Good Will claim to Buell. They say it is NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR and will do nothing. So much for GOOD WILL.
Apparently, since this is normal, you should expect yours to melt sometime down the road.
Total nonsense.

mine has also, but i attribute it to the aftermarket high watt bulbs i had until switching to silverstars.

yeah i would definately be mad if it were the stock bulb there is just no excuse for that. it would be like buying a car and having to replace the headlight housing every 3-5 years....cmon!!

My 06XB12Ss did the same thing. But my dealer replaced the entire front assembly under warranty. They told me that they never heard of that before. I also believe that a couple other Buellers have had the same problem.

Some dealers will try to get away with anything. You have at minimum, a 2 year front-to-back unlimited mileage warranty.

I'd call Buell Customer service myself. Sounds possible the dealer is trying to
pull a fast one on you.

I have noted that when some people tie a fluffy toy to the front of their bike like when at a xmas toy run .Your headlight can overheat and melt the lense.

Just yesterday I had my low beam replaced under warranty. Mine looked like some condensation had got in there if you looked at it from the front. The mechanics were stumped on what happend and why but they got me a new assembly and installed it no problem. If I was riding at night like it was. All I had was a big halo of light with a big dark spot where I needed to see. It all better now.

I heard that the xb9r have a problem where the reflective material inside flakes off and the like gets dimmer. Well when I bought this bike I noticed that at night the low beams wont let me see 2 feet infront of me, which is scary when its pitch black. What is buell going to do about this??? Why isn't there a safety recall?

Isham, throw a pair of same wattage Silverstars in there. Not a whole lot brighter, but whiter - does makes a difference.

Isham I've heard of that problem, but I recently removed my low beam housing and replaced it. (at homecoming)

The reflector was perfect. My bike is an 03. I'm not sure that the problem is that common. Most I've heard about were using
higher wattage bulbs than stock.

I admit I've been tempted to use the higher watt bulbs, but I've decided to go with HID lights if I go that way. They are
cheaper and the ballast is smaller than they used to be, and it won't burn up your light housing or wiring. Good stuff!

If someone needs a replacement reflector I have one. The Lens is not there though.(the reason I changed it) PM me if you need it.

If you having a problem with the reflector degrading, report it to the NHTSA. There is an online form that makes it easy.

If enough people report it, it will trigger an investigation, and a recall if it is justified. The NHTSA cannot recall vehicles if nobody complains.

I suspect that there are standards for light output, and that if the problem is widespread that NHTSA would force Bull to correct the problem. This is a pretty basic safety issue.

Mind you , I am surprised the Standard headlights meet the standards, The worst thing about my Firebolt is night riding. My 12 year old Honda does a much better job of putting light on the road.

Isham,

Where did you hear about that? It new to me. Do you use high beam and does it illuminate okay? Same basic light I believe. You might have run into a bad light from the headlight manufacturer. If so, Buell will replace it under warranty with a good one. Cool eh?

BTW, very cool photo in your profile. VERY cool! : )

The r headlights are different from the S lights.
R's use H3 and the S uses H4.
The silver paint (?) inside the R housings DO flake off n make the bulb seem dimmer.
I recently replaced both assemblys with 2 highbeams.
I dont ride at night so I really cant say any differnce from low/high but they are both VERY bright now and both the same instead of one being duller looking.
Only drawback II can think of is the highbeam has more of a spot and the low has more of a flood.
So with 2 highbeams I have 2 spots instead of a mix of flood and spot.

Typical HD dealership/servicing bullshyte!!! They are the most unscrupulous pieces of shyte on Earth. Trust me, they never sent shyte to Buell. 'cause if they did, they would have to cover the replacement. This is my biggest problem with Buell... having to deal with the HD shyteheads!!!

Why is a website more effective than a dealer regarding customer service? No reason an item like this should need someone like Court to iron it out...there might be some Buell owners who aren't Badweb members too, maybe...

Buell is a small manufacturer competing in the market with some true megoliths. I'd think customer service would be an obvious area for them to be very competetive--smaller companies are often "closer" to their customers, almost by definition. Not that they should open themselves up to any scam going, but giving the customer the benefit of the doubt really would create "good-will" and wouldn't cost all that much. You'd hear a LOT less whining from folks with problems if their local dealer would say, "No problem, we'll just fix that up for you right now, no charge!" rather than, "Well, I don't think that's covered under your warranty, sorry--but I've got this nice Sportster over here..."

Especially something like a melted headlight lens. Just replace the d*mn thing--any expense will be justified by increased customer loyalty. "Hey, I had a problem, but the dealer fixed it, no prob!" sounds a LOT better than "I had this problem, but the f*ckin' dealer says to go shove it! I'll never deal with them again," at the local bike night...

Thanks again Court.

"Who is this "Court" guy lookin' out for our best interests?

Yeah, Hhhmmm, well ehh,....
Yes: Do a search on Badweb for "Court" as the author`s name. You will find out.
To help you at the start:
Court took off a couple of sabbatical years to work with Erik, when Buells were made by hand.
He took his own job as construction worker again (do a Google search on Canfield Construction) but his enthusiasm for all things Buell is still unsurpassed, as is his helpfulness.
And if you ask me "Who is that Erik guy."
Well, ehhh, he started to make the first Buell motorcycles with his own hands and brains. (Do a Google search on Buell.)

O.K. Buck,
Maybe Hans' bird is to strong a reply but...

have you noticed an entire forum thread dedicated to Court as in "Court in Session".

No it is not about the local justice systems it is a way to contact the man on our side, Court Canfield. He may not always give you the answer you want, but he will always be far and honest. A rare thing to find in this world.

Anyway, Court was one of the first test pilots for Buell. I still chuckle about his story of running out of gas in a snow storm and not realizing the 'gas' he 'borrowed' from a tractor was diesel.

Sorry Court, but it still makes me chuckle.

Buck, as suggested you might want to do some research so you will understand that when you hear something from Court you will know it's a solid response.

Buckingfuell,
Sorry for my misunderstanding.
Has to do something with the language barrier.
I have to translate the question first in Dutch and than formulate an answer in English.
In my ears the sentence "Who is this "Court" guy ..etc", sounds a little bit denigrating; different from the neutral "Who is Court".
And that`s what pulled my strings.
Hans

I’m glad there is a guy like Court on our side. And I’m extremely happy this particular mater got resolved. The reason for that is… Cerini is my local dealer. They have always been very helpful… but I’ve never taken my bike in for warranty work.

Thanks Court!!

Thanks XBDuck.

Hans, it's all good. Lookin' back, I can see how my comment may have been interpreted as cynicism. I just wanted to figure out who was this guy who seemed to have some pull with Buell corporate. The thread gives the impression that he is some sort of public relations or ombudsman for Buell. Just wanted to know more about the friendly Samaratin looking out for our best interests.

As for the language thing, well, when I was living in Europe, it seemed I was always getting in trouble with the way I say things, especially in France.
