I bought my bike knowing that it had a D&D exhaust, and an "aftermarket ignition". It was a dealer trade-in, so nobody was sure of what kind it is. I was wondering if anyone could tell some of the different brands of aftermarket ignitions you could get for an XB9S.

Thanks!!

The ECM, or the coil pack?

I'm sorry for the confusion. They must have meant the coil pack.

I'm very confused on what they were talking about. Obviously it didn't matter either way because I was buying the bike reguardless.

Well...

...you can always pull the seat off and have a look-see under there to see if you spot any aftermarket goodies. That's where the ECM on a XB9S resides and a PC or something of that sort would likely be stuffed in there somewhere.

The coil pack resides in between the jugs under the airbox, though, a tad more difficult to get to (and I've not heard of anyone replacing it, though that most certainly doesn't mean it's impossible).

I've not heard of anyone replacing the stock ignition either.
But do what Darthane has suggested, it's way easy to see if a TFI, PCII or the like has been installed as it piggy backs the ECM, and there's not many places it can be put. None of them are stealthy.
Since they said "D&D with..." it's probably a PCIII or TFI.
Either are a good way to go with the D&D if tuned properly. More people have had luck with a PCIII than the TFI I'm afraid.

If you don't find a Power Commander or a TFI ignition box, about the size of a pack of cigarettes you might take a look at the Buell ECM it looks like this:

sss

See if it is stamped " For Race use Only."

Perhaps they meant the Buell Race ECM when they said aftermarket ignition. They are a lot more common than the other alternatives mentioned above.

In addition, they can not be tuned without special equipment, and really do not need to be dyno tuned, they run fine just as they come out of the box. The other units need careful dyno tuning to run at their best.

He may have an early Race ECM that isnt marked as well so you really would need to look at the part number on it to ensure what it is. I am an owner of such a Race ECM.

Good point Sean.

Perhaps you could post the stock and race part numbers?

Always seems to be a bit of confusion about them.
