I what to change out the brake fluids and wondered what is the difference between Dot 3 and Dot 4. I have some new Dot 3. Do I really need to put Dot 4 in the XB's brakes or will Dot 3 be ok. 10,000 miles on the bike. Could not find anything on this in the knowledge vault.

I once asked the same thing to an auto mechanic about putting dot 4 in a car specifying dot 3. His answer was put in what the manufacturer specifies.

DOT4 has a much higher boiling point and absorbs less moisture than DOT3, go with DOT4.

Firebolteric_ma, I think you're thinking of DOT5, which is chemically incompatible with DOT3/DOT4. Use DOT4 because your Buell NEEDS the higher boiling point... but if you need to "top up" and you only have DOT3 available you should be fine.

heat + moisture buildup = worn/destroyed seals; hence Dot 4 for th higher heat tolerence.
