I haven't bought a manual yet and I have two questions that I didn't see directly answered in a quick search of the tech section. Need to adjust these ASAP.:
1) I want to adjust the front shock preload. I bought a 15/16" socket that seems about right (unless metric) but I'll have to modify it or need to remove the handlebars or gage cluster making this a much larger job. Is the large, thin nut on top of the top triple clamp to lock the adjustment in place or do I just crank on the top of the "shock" until the correct number of lines show? The ride isn't too bad normally but I'm heavy and the bike is really harsh when I hit potholes with the stock setup. I've seen all kinds of suggested setups but not how to do the adjustment (front preload only).
2) Do I have to remove the cover (and so buy a new gasket first) to adjust the clutch? Since the 1000 mile service Neutral is almost impossible to hit when stopped with the engine on (like at a stop light). Since it hits every time with the engine off, I'm guessing I need to adjust the clutch cable a bit. It doesn't look like it is done at the lever or where the cable enters the case.
I've worked on lots of cars but am new to bike work. Thanks for any info.

You shouldnt have to remove anything to adjust the preload. Just spin it to show the correct lines needed.

Clutch cable adjustment is under a rubber boot. Just follow your cable, you will see what I'm talking about.

You would do well to set the suspension to your weight (it's in the owners manual). If the ride feels harsh over bumps on the front it's more likely due to compression or rebound damping than preload. Keep in mind that preload ONLY adjusts reide height. Not static spring tension. WRT the damping... The forks/shock that we have seem to be more sensitive than most other bikes. I'm not sure if this is due to the raical geometry or a damping unit with a large range of adjustment but it's a fact. What tire pressures are you running? If you're at the tire manufacturers listed setting on the sidewall you're most likely too high. That rating os for when the tires are hot. I use 31-33 on the street with Metzeler M1's and M3's. The cap in the center of the tripple adjusts the tension placed on the bearings in the steering head. At the high end of it's correct torque setting it also acts somewhat like a very weak steering damper.
The front preload is adjusted by turning the larger "nut" on the top of the forks only. Nothing is needed to lock it into place. Just turn it until the proper number of lines are showing. I believe the measurement means that it should be "on" the suggested line. That line will be sitting right at where it's about to sink into the fork. So for two three lines you would see two above the fork and one right at the fork.

There are three places to adjust the clutch.

One at the lever. One in front of the engine covered by a rubber tube and one under the clutch inspection cover.

the preload adjusters are 22mm
You may have to move the handlebars a little to get the socket on the adjusters.

Thanks. It is set to my weight, actually I am right on the edge of the next higher, but looking at the shocks it appears to me to be running low. I was going to do a real sag check to get the ride height correct. Per the handbook this is likely compression which I have adjusted both ways with no improvement.

I'll look for the boot, but didn't see anything like that from a quick look at either end of the cable external to the tranny.

Dave, I'll call if the sag adjustment instructions I found don't seem to make sense.

Look at that... clutch adjuster right in the middle of the cable under the boot as stated. I never would've looked on THAT side.
