I just bought a new (New old Stock) 03 XB9S with 9 miles on it.(6-10-06) At 474 miles I took it in to HD because the Primary cover and the cam side cover were seeping oil, no drips, a stain if you will. HD called it "Wicking", and said they wouldn't change gaskets. I think it's a set of gaskets that have been sitting on a bike in a show room for 3 years and got hard. Any input?

while they should have just changed them out for you the gaskets are only a couple bucks each and easy to do yourself

My bike, an 03 Firebolt, does that, and did from day 1.

Problem is, if you wanna so much as check your tranny oil or primary tension, you have to open those covers, and the gaskets are not re-useable. So I've been cutting my own.

However, during a recent trip to a Harley dealer for some warranty work, I decided to check the price on these gaskets and possibly buy a few. The ones I was given are definitely different than the ones that came in my bike--these have a metal "core," and look a fair bit thicker and more effective. The parts guy told me he's pretty sure they're a newer part...

So it might just be an "early XB" thing. Of course, I was also a bit surprised to find the black crinkle case coating extends right over all the gasket mating surfaces...

Daves, during my recent warranty service, I mentioned the "wicking" on my bike to the mechanic as well. His suggestion was to buy a spray (I think S-100 or something) from the parts counter, and just wash it off.

Every ride???

The warranty work consisted of replacing my oil cooler, due to a fitting nut cross-threaded from the factory. A simple job--but it required him to replace the oil filter, too (to get one of the lines off). I told him before beginning work that the oil was standard H-D 20W50, as I assumed he would replace any oil lost during the operation. I asked him about it afterwards, he told me I had only lost a little bit and not to worry. When I checked it myself afterwards, I found it down almost 500 ml (a pint).

This on top of the dealership where I bought the bike, which had the oil tank overfull by about 700 ml when I first bought it. Oil level is pretty basic stuff--I gotta wonder about any mechanic who can't get it right.

Just more reasons for me to do all my own work...

That's why I HATE taking the bike to the Harley dealer. The service guy's response to me when I had a similar problem with my Cyclone was "Well if it didn't bleed from time to time, you wouldn't know it was alive."

Ha ha, very funny... FIX IT!! I've put hundreds of thousands of miles on a variety of different motorcycles and I guess they were all "dead ones." Idiot.

I'm not mechanical enough to do my own work, but there's a local service shop that gladly does work on my Buell, and from what I saw the last time, I'm not the ONLY Buell owner who takes his bike to them.

Hey, thanks for the input guys. It's agreed HD service is a joke. The tech put 28 miles on my bike and didn't fix anything. The service manager said, and I quote,"My Fatboy does it, It's not a problem, I would just ride it and enjoy it, I wouldn't worry about it." Well I am worried about it because It's staining the cases.

H-D dealers have been a sticking point with me buying a Buell. I finally found one that isn't full of buy a H-D instead morons. H-D service techs are used to dealing with H-D owners who think the bike marking it's territory is a good thing.

I swear if this idiocy of dealerships (Honda, Yamaha, and Kawasaki too) keeps up I'm opening my own shop. I can replace gaskets and them not leak and change a tire for less than $137 labor - EACH FREAKING TIRE!

i have taken theme on/off severall times, with out renewing the seals, but as time go's by there becoming to big ( seals are swelling )
and it's was sweating just a tiny bit, have don that from new.
some rtv gasket around the edges solves it
the later xb's have alu covers with flat paper gaskets
