guys, i need a quick confirmation.

I have bought Mobil 1 V Twin oil and just want to double check that it can be used in the trans (cluth area) as well.

Have been told so by a shop but you know how that goes.

The Mobil oil is 20w50, is that enough for the trans??

Help please.

just just some interesting reading on here and found a thread stating that gear oil and motor oil are weighted differently.

THat puts my mind to rest on the viscosity part.

Think i answered my own question, i will go with Mobil 1 in both cavities for now unless anyone can give a reason not to.

You want to use Mobil 80w90 Synthetic Gear Oil in your trans you will notice the difference over the Harley Trans Fluid instantly. Your trans will definately be smother especially on downshifts. The regular 20w50 V-Twin Oil is far to light for the trans.

Not true- if you search for the post Aussie mentioned you'll see that 80W90 gear oil and 25W-50 motor oil are very close to the same actual viscosity.

For that matter, someone here e-mailed Mobil a couple of years back and asked what they recommended for Buell primaries/transmissions. They recommended Mobil-1 10W-40 motorcycle oil. As far as I know, nobody here is running it, but I'd be curious to see how it compares to the other fluids people have been running.

Why two different viscosity grading scales for engine versus tranny lubricants? Answer: To help avoid inadvertently filling the crankcase with tranny lube. Tranny lube contains additives that when exposed to the combustion environment produce compounds that are extremely harmful to the combustion chamber and its components and the rest of the engine's lubricated bearing surfaces. The M1 twin oil is great in the trans. I use Red Line as it has a higher shear strength which is very important in transmissions.
