I have an 03 XB9S and the speedo is not working. So I have read all the posts about the sensor getting covered with metal chips or dirty and checked that out, it was clean.
I just had the 10,000 mile service (I bought the bike in 10/04) and the dealer says the whole speedo is bad. What I don't understand is it always works the first ride in the morning but after the bike is hot it will quit. So how could it be the speedometer head when that bart of the bike doesn't get hot?
Any one have any ideas?

IIRC it has more to do with the voltage regulator for the speedo sensor.

There is a retrofit kit available that permanently cures the problem.

Electronics do get hot while operating. One of the small chips or transitors in the cluster may be hot during operation, tough call. I would talk to the dealer about ordering, under the pretense they will take it back or credit you the money, if it does not fix what THEY say is the problem.

I have done this before with my old M2, and as long as everyone is up front on what to expect, it was not a problem.

Food for thought
