The question that I have is since I installed the Race ECM on the bike with the open air kit and the Drummer it has started to ping. But it is also 111 degrees outside too. It pinged a little when it was cooler but not as bad as now. I'm sure it has to do with the heat. Also since I put the ecm on it uses more fuel than before too. DUH! Anyway do you think if I mix a little 110 race fuel, would that it would help. And yes its unleaded race fuel. The fuel that I use is Chevron 91 octane. Or is my timing off. Any thoughts.

Im sure the race fuel will help, but it wouldn't hurt to check the timing. If you ride in alot of stop and go traffic I would be inclined to bump the timing back alittle while it's that hot.IMO...Charlie

OK, how do I check the timing on this beast. Its a 06XBSs. Can I check it with a regular timing light, and what should the timing be.

This is a hot topic on the Adventure Board, member Davo has been doing a lot of research into the problem, pinging seems to occur frequently with some of our Ulys. Might want to check out the "timing" thread.

I have been fighting the pinging problem with the race race kit on my 2004 XB12R.

Things I have done to try to correct the pinging with race ECU are:

* Retard timing mechanically = No improvement
* Reset TPS = No improvement
* Changed intake manifold seals = No improvement
* Ride bike in 65 degree weather = No pinging
* Remove race ECM only, install stock ECU and ride in warmer weather 70+ degrees = No pinging

I have been fighting the pinging since I purchased the bike.

Currently I am considering the Rapid-Bike Add On Adjustable ECM Unit

Heyfred,

How far did you retard timing?

70+ weather with the stock ECM and no pinging problems?

So has anyone tried a higher octane fuel to see if the ping goes away.

Right on, Bigbuell. Is there nothing better than AKI 91 available to you?

Here in Australia I use RON 98, which is roughly AKI 93. No problems with pinging, even when looking for it by using heavy load at low revs. My bike is standard, although the race kit is going on tomorrow.

The other thing you could try is 20-30% methyl benzine. Mixed with AKI 91 pump gas, that should give an overall AKI of 95! Of course, it's as toxic as hell, but still freely available in Australia!

Explanatory Note
We measure octane with RON (Research Octane Number) in Australia, whereas you guys use the Anti Knock Index or AKI. AKI is the average of RON and MON (Motor Octane Number) or RON+MON/2. The difference works out to about RON = AKI + 5.

Yes I agree with the Colonel, I have race kit and it used to ping on hot days, but with 98 RON fuel it's fine - except SHELL 98 which makes it run bad for about 20 minutes while it seems to adjust to it.

Hey guys thanks for the info. I'll try some higher octane fuel. Here in Fresno there are a couple places that I can buy some 110 race fuel, its like $38 dollars a 5 gal container. Or would you guys recommend a octane boost instead.

Be careful, some of the race gas is leaded, and some octane boosters contain
lead. Leaded fuel will kill your o2 sensor in seconds.

Be sure to check before you put it in your tank!

I have experienced this exactly also. Mine does it if the snorkel is removed all the time. So I had to put it back in with the race ecm. Woud adjusting the static timing be reuired for a race ecm? I was told by a dealership it was. It doesnt say it in the manual but is this something that experience has taught some of you all.??

How far did you retard timing?

I did it by trial and error. Left the cover off ignition and kept retarding till pinging went away.

83 degrees out today and no issues.
Second gear acceleration, front end comes up and carries without a light tug.

Race fuel
Thought about that, but limited on where to get when out on a ride, so, I am doing the best I can to make the perform on pump gas

I have same problem with my 04 XB12R. So boosting the octane works are not? I hate ideal of messing with the timing.
