Doing some fact finding of my own to complete the HID install.....the sad part is that the SS does not have as much room as the R behind the front fly screen or what ever you want to call it ....well no kidding. Has anyone else looked into it? I will probably buy a kit and figure it out....not sure if I will get it from hiddepot or aerostitch...... | ||

Navygunner, The thickness of the ballasts on the Xenon Depot kit is misleading. It is true that most of the ballast is less than an inch thick, but where the wires plug into the ballast it is about an inch thick. This didn't stop me from fitting those ballasts similar to how the guy did in the ifmracing forum, but I was scared for a little bit. Great kit by the way. Here's a couple of videos I made of me turning on my HID lights. I just installed mine on my 9sx, i placed both ballasts under the airbox and everything else under the flyscreen, did just the same as corporatemonkey did at his post at the knolowege vault! | ||

Thanks for the heads up Samiam. I can't wait for the kit to arrive. I leave for work early in the morning every day(Around 4:30AM) and am not very impressed with the factory lighting. Great videos by the way. Your posts made me finally get around to doing this. After I saw the install you linked I had to do it. Thanks for the great post! Patrick | ||

Samiam, By the way welcome back. I just got back from the sand box myself 2 months ago. It sure is great being back. If it is one thing I can take from a year over there. I now don't mind wearing my leathers in 100 degree temperatures any longer. Kind of feels cool.  | ||

THx.......I will probabaly do a air box install. I am in columbus here....bout half an hour or so north of xenia. so nice roads that way between xenia and yellow springs and down to waynesville. nice stuff. If you make it back this way let me know. | ||

I have seen pics of two different installs....one on a 12R put it in the front fairing and another put the ballast in the airbox...... I am just gonna buy the kit and see what works out. | ||

I was the person who put it in the airbox. I have only 2 concerns of doing it. 1) did I hamper performance by placing it inside the air box? (I would figure no, but...) 2) Dust... (with all of the air swirling around inside the air box your HID components better be well sealed. | ||

plenty of room behind the flyscreen for ballast and ignitor unit. check KV for rather thorough write ups by a couple of us. got my HID setup from xenon depot in canada. slow shipping, a little expensive, but well worth the trouble if you ride at night. | ||

Fullpower, Your install was my original inspiration. I found there was not enough room behind the flyscreen unless I removed the horn. Even then my ballast was a little thick. The newest ballast are much thinner, but they trade that for extra width. When I inquired about xenondepot motorcycle kit, hey informed me that it included a longer wiring harness. To get the new thinner ballast I would have had to order an automotive kit, $ I didn't want to spend. | ||

I was considering doing just the high beam on my firebolt. However, since my new low beam assembly still has the half- moon diffuser in it it may be worthwhile to do both. It looks like it'll make me more visible even in daylight. I usually run my high beams 24/7 unless I'm in the middle of a group ride. Do you get a lot of high beams flashed at you with the HID low beam? | ||

Actually, I haven't gotten anyone flashing their high beams when I ride at night (or dusk/sunset), even with a passenger riding with me. During the daytime I always ride with my high beam on and I've never been flashed. Sam | ||

no problems with oncoming drivers, my low beam installation has a pretty sharply defined cutoff. illuminates the road VERY well. i DID remove my horn from its original location, did not think it needed to hide behind the flyscreen, whittled a bracket from a scrap of 1/8 th aluminum, mounted horn down with oil cooler on lower left side. looks like it belongs there. |
