I am another BWB member looking into getting into the race scene. I cant seem to find the bike I really want at a price I can afford, prefer the 12R but will also take a 12S. Looking for totaled of course, but still in good enough condition to rebuild. Anyway so I was looking at the old school Honda Hawk's. Yes I know they are old and not made anymore but does anyone know if they are raced at all and if so how competitive are they? Not sure if they can even compete with the SV650's. What classes would I be able to participate in if the Hawk is a viable alternative to the XB. Thanks |

why an S over an R?? if u r racing i think its quite obvious the R is better option, as it puts u in a better & lower position for managing the power at wide open .. not to mention easier to lay over bike when hanging off & getting back on the gas. i saw a honda hawk at my track a few weeks ago .. was always near the back of the fast group, but he knew how to ride, it just cldn't stay w/ the race bikes & newer i4's. |

Well I ask because I cannot find a 12R or 12S. It doesnt matter which it is as they are essentially the same bike just a few differences that wont matter much when it comes to racing. If I did happen to pick one up the S that would not be a hindrance as either one I got would lose most of it's street duty items such as pegs, bodywork, etc.. After all that is done the it would not matter which one I was using. In regards to the Hawk, I was wondering if the bike has the "potential" to play with the bigger bikes due to it's size/weight advantage. Much like our Buells this bike may not have the most power however, it does have the flickability that the bigger bikes just dont have. Of course this bike's motor would be rebuilt anyway for additional power, but still wouldnt be able to keep up in the straights. Anyway, if there is no way the Hawk would be competitive at all then I will steer away from it. I have also been looking at the SV650 however it seems for some reason that due to this little bikes ability to perform on the track the owners know this and I cannot seem to find any decently priced bikes. All of these factors seem to come into play which is really why I would like to find a salvaged bike. The only bike that I seem to find for decent prices that are not salvaged are the little Hawk's which is why I am leaning towards one of those. Thanks again for all the help and recommendations and if others could comment on their thoughts of how these Hawks may or may not perform on the track it would be greatly appreciated. |

The hawk will not be directly competitive in a race between equal riders. However as a new racer you don't need the fastest bike on the track. You need a reliable bike so you can get some track time under your belt. A stock bore hawk would do fine for you and makes a fun street bike after you retire it in favor of a faster bike. Look for upgraded suspension on them, it does make a difference. |
