Does anyone have a ball park guestimation as to how long/ miles a clutch should last? Ive had my bike since Aug of 2005, and have put 14,000 and some change on it. Since, Ive had to relubricate my cables as they started to feel "spongy", and I dont think the same amount of tension is there as when it was new. ADAM | ||

The spongeeness is most likely the clutch cable stretching and rubbing on the innere housing walls. There are 2 ways to remove that feeling. A new clutch cable will BLOW you away in how different it feels. OR, a hydraulic clutch kit upgrade to remove that feeling forever!! I have seen Buells with over 40K on them, and the clutch has no problems at all. Bruce | ||

I asked that same question to Mike, who pits for Paul James and others last weekend. As I do track days I was curious. He said he thought he would do the first on one of the 2004s before long. So it sounds like it takes a lot of abuse. He said the indicator was a burnt smell when you change the primary oil that is starting to slip. Sounded like a good plan to me. | ||

I've gone through 2 clutch cables and no clutch packs. Stupid dust storms. I Just looked at the clutches and I've still got a good amount of life left at 27k mi. First, check to see if you have begun to break single strands of the clutch cable. ( you should be able to pull the lever and look at the exposed cable. This is where my cables have broken.) Second, Re-adjust your clutch and cable as per service manual. See how that works. | ||

I'm also at 27k miles on the original clutch and it still hooks up solid. | ||

cool guys thanx, I was just wondering, and no I have not had the clutch adjusted in a while but I did have my eye on the hydraulic clutch kit but my wallet cwouldnt be able to afford it right now. | ||

Anyone who goes with American Sport Bike clutch kit will defineately enjoy it!! No more lubing, adjusting, cable breakage issues. I love mine, and would/will do it again in the future to any XB I own!! Bruce | ||

Do you need that Mueller Power Clutch item as well or is that optional? Also are their ANY cons at all to the hydraulic set up? ADAM | ||

it is possible, but not likely, to have a seal go out on the hydraulic clutch and leave you without a clutch. Then again your clutch cable could break and you'd be no better off. | ||

The clutches themselves seem to be really durable. I consider myself to be pretty hard on clutches (practicing launches, burnouts, lots of clutched wheelies) and I put 17k miles on my M2 and 23k miles on my XB12R with neither one showing any signs of clutch issues. | ||

I chewed up my first clutch on my 12R after 5K. I was trying to learn rolling burnouts one afternoon in a parking lot with a bunch of stunters. I don't really care to know how to do rolling burnouts anymore. Of course it probably didn't help that it was 95 degrees outside, but none the less I couldn't care less about them anymore. I'll just stick to wheelies and scaring myself with the occasional stoppie. | ||
