I have read several positive posts about Mobil 1 75W-90 for the tranny.

Will it hurt to use Mobil 1 for the tranny while still using HD's original oil in the engine?

Won't hurt one bit.

Probably will make your transmission shift more smoothly.

Good idea to check the primary chain adjustment when you change the fluid.
Several of the experts here seem to believe that 3/4" slack is better than the tighter factory spec. I would tend to agree.

While you are at it, the Mobil One will be just fine in your engine, (15W50), and probably cost a bit less than the Harley oil.

Both procedures are clearly described in the Shop manual, an invaluable asset for any Buell owner.

there was some discussion about synthetics making the clutch slip.....

Any truth to it?

I don't think the M1 75W-90 gear lube is a proper use in a wet clutch application.

I'm sure the 10W-40 or 20W-50 or even the 15W-50 will work fine. That being said I wonder what the big deal is with Harley saying the new clutch needs its Formula+ to prevent slipping?

I'm using the M1 20W-50 cycle oil in the engine and for now the HD Formula+ in the trans/primary.

I think this may apply to 2006 and later Buells, which have a new tranny and clutch springs, and other motorcycles where the engine oil is shared by the clutch. Not exactly sure about that point, though.

I do know that I have used the Mobil One 75W90 in the primary case of my 2003 XB nine for 12,000 miles, haven't noticed any trouble yet.

At the tech seminar at Homecoming the subject of primary/ transmission oil came up. The engineering crew there strongly recommended the Formula+ for any of the XB's. The impression that I got was that they really believe in the Formula+. It sounds like it will have a big benefit to clutch life on any of the bikes. It's less than $7 a quart at my local dealership. I switched to it this weekend when I did my 25K service. They also stressed only needing to change it at 10K miles.

I have 25,000 miles on the clutch using Mobil 1 75-90 synthetic. It work great!

I'm running the Syn-3 front and back, no problems found, 10 complete oil changes so far.
