I have been visiting this site for a month now.
One thing strikes me>
There is a distinct "marketing" flavor to many of the posts on this forum, meaning- we have folks- advertisers- that -actively- sell their products within the dialog content of this "forum" ("...18 dollars through me...)
My thought is... it's cool to have members recommend a product; it’s another for a retailer to do so in the same pretext.
Just has me wondering. Otherwise, really like the website

well when you have very few retailers supporting the aftermarket for this bike the ones that do really do well, I say why not? I mean they are only helping support bueullers and getting a bike they love.

If a vendor gave a bad piece of advice, someone would call them out on it.

The retailers that you see selling on this forum are sponsors of BadWeb. Their sponsorship keeps BadWeb going with no cost to any of us.

The sponsors here offer a great wealth of knowledge and support. Although we have a dealer 40 miles from us, we order parts and Buell clothing from Daves in Appleton. He knows his product and generally has more in stock than most other dealerships. Daves offers 10% discount to BadWebbers and the parts are delivered to your doorstep. Even when he's on vacation or has a day off, he seems to be checking BadWeb and taking cell calls. His customer service is second to none.

We have also ordered parts from Al at American Sport Bike in CA. He and his wife have been most helpful and offer some great aftermarket parts and accessories. Again, great customer service.

The best thing with both of these is that you can contact them through BadWeb and go on with your day.

I got a great deal and customer service second to none becasue of this boards sponsors. They are welcome to chime in anytime as far as I am concerned.

I have not bought anything from Daves (I am poor) but despite that he still pipped in and gave me the part number to the updated speedo sensor. Something my down the street dealer did not, TWICE!!!

These guys are great and I think appreciated by far more people here than not.

Any retailer, vendor, salesman whatever... that begins their relationship with a potential customer by communicating with them is the best kind you can get.

And lets face it, this place is the Buell Fortress of Solidarity. There is no other congregation like this anywhere else on the web that I have found. The vendors who provide the money to keep the site up so regular folks can help each other out have the absolute right to hawk their wares. I believe they do so tastefully without exception. Not to mention all the free advice they give out.

Thats just how I feel about it. I think the vendors deserve our thanks.

Thanks.

Hi ya Tiger, as already stated the "Vendors" on our web site are people that pay to be sponsors. Therefore they have the right to push their products, do not forget that we have less to put up with because none sponsors are not welcome here.

Sure if the opportunity arises to push their products they take it, that's just good business. However people like Daves for instance are happy to pass on good free solid advice because he knows "You" could just be his next potential customer.

As for good forum bad forum, guess that all comes down to what you are interested in.

All I can say is Onya Daves keep plugging your products and service anyway you can, if you had not been building your reputation on this site I would not have heard of you nor would I have purchased the products I needed down here in Aussie from you at the price I did, let alone the great delivery time, service and advice given.

I think it's great how some of our sponsors also have a genuine love for Buells and take the time to post and be involved with our day to day babbles even when there is no chance of making a sale on that particular post.

So all I can say is to all our sponsors THANK YOU for taking the time to participate on our board, as well as selling and advertising your products.

OF course the counter to this is that people get smacked down for talking about products offered by non-sponsors.

So, as long as you want "advice" from people that profit from giving you that advice then this site is perfect.

If you want to freely discuss Buell products and sources, then you need to look elsewhere.

Personally I would happily pay to support a site that valued freedom of opinion over sponsors, and there are thousands of vibrant web based communities that work that way.

If it wasn't for the sponsors financial support, who would pay for the existence of the Badweb?

Steve, I agree. It seems if you’re a sponsor and pay your penance to the administrators, it’s OK to hustle, but if you try it as a forum member, you’re threatened with expulsion. Even if it is a product, or service that is potentially good for anyone with a Buell.
Just the “American way” I guess?

Well, maybe you could have a site where sponsors just sponsor, as opposed to here where they have have editorial control. God forbid you discuss a good Buell related product that is not sold by a sponsor.

Alternatively I am sure there are hundreds of members who would be willing to make a small annual, voluntary contribution to cover the cost of the site. There are HUNDREDS of successful bike related web Sites, and this is the ONLY one that I am aware of that gives sponsors so much control over what products can and cannot be discussed.

If you post a link to a dealer that offers a larger discount than Appleton Buell, that post WILL be deleted. I prefer a forum where the members are free to discuss and recommend whatever vendor has treated them well. I think Appleton Buell would thrive in a free forum, Dave offers incredible service, so why not allow mention of alternatives?

What you have here is the Web Forum equivalent o
f an Infomercial.

71sportster,

You don't miss a single opportunity to throw it up on the wall and see if it'll stick do you?

Have you ever wondered why you have to pay the local mall/outlet shopping center for a spot so you can "hustle" your goods?

Give me a freaking break.

Garp, You're, in a nutshell, wrong. There has been numerous discussions on a wide variety of different products and I can't remember anyone getting slapped down for discussing it. Please,,,,,this is not only a tired argument, but also quite silly.

Garp, You're, in a nutshell, wrong.

I have seen threads with links to dealers that offer 20% off on Buell parts deleted. The reason given? because they compete with sponsors.

I have also seen people here who had a good idea and wanted to offer their idea for sale, but who were afraid to pursue it for fear of the sponsor police.

That stifles free discussion, and that seems wrong to me.

I think it is great that sponsors want to support the community, but I don't think they need to be protected from competition.

Garp,

Good reply and civil too -- thank you.

If sponsorship doesn't have some inherent advantages then there'd be no sponsorship.

Generally the inherent advantage is considered to be the banner ads at the top and bottom of pages. The implementation of this policy really bugs me.

Never once ever heard of anyone getting kicked out of a mall for telling a friend about a great deal available elsewhere. Recently another website (The eeeevil Borg) had a link to Buell branded boots for a killer price. Couldn't feel comfortable passing it on here as it would run afoul of the policy. That's a real world harm for the members here.

There have been several discussions about products that our sponsors do not offer. One specifically being the Uly bag liners. That discussion has come up 2 if not 3 times. Each time people have been referred to a company in CA. I asked a custodian and it was not considered inappropriate posting because it was not a conflict of interest for our sponsors since they don't offer that product.

When the postings become a conflict of interest between sponsoring and non-sponsoroing companies, it's not fair to allow the non-sponsoring company "free advertising".

Again, we are all free to choose where and how we spend our money. No one here is forced to buy from our sponsors. They do offer a lot of free advice, as do many of the participates here on BadWeb. While some may not apply to me personally at the moment, it may in the future.

I was once asked to leave a Radio Shack because a friend and I were debating the pros and cons of the TRS-80 vs the Apple. It was in a mall.

I would like to know about any Buell related product that is available to me. I do not think a link or discussion to said product should be a violaltion of BWB policy. If Garp sees someone selling a product (even one sold by our sponsors) for a discount he should be able to post the link.

I once tried to get people interested in hot air ballooning or paragliding and tried to offer up a barter deal and badweb discount to stir up some business. Blake moved the topic to the links section. It did not seem unfair.

I think the policy is in place so that evry thread does not turn into some guy (or his friends) constantly plugging his products or services without paying to be an advertiser.

The web is full of these Guerilla marketers. I for one and glad they are not here. Although to be honest they are not on SacBorg either.......................

Blakes house Blakes rules. I don't always agree with him but I have to admit this is a nice forum because of it. There is lots more substance and many more posts than SacBorg. I think this must be because most people like Blake house. (I am just glad I don't have to clean up after the party)
