I am looking for any modifications to the stock exhaust on my xb12ss that I can make to improve the sound without sacrificing performance or harming the engine. Eventually I will buy a new pipe but I can't seem to find the funds right now. Thanks!

I've been playing around with stock mufflers for a little while now. In my spare time, which means progress is slow. Anyway, I did a Straight through pipe inside the original can with a Car Chemistry insert. The insert was supposed to quiet the exhaust and increase exhaust speed. What I think I wound up with is a restricted yet loud muffler, back to the drawing board.

Modifying the stock muffler is very simple if you have a cut off wheel and a welder. Without them there's not much you can do. The hard part is coming up with a design that works. I haven't given up yet but i'm working on other projects at the moment. In the mean time I bought a Jardine, which sounds great. I'll get back to it before the end of summer and if I find something that works I'll do a write up.

Hey Soggy here's something to try if you would like to know "if" you want your bike louder.
I have not seen a cheaper way to do it yet and still be able to go back to stock also.The muffler uses an exhaust servo motor to change the exhaust flow for torque output throughout the rpm range.It basically either goes to the back,to the front,to the back and out when in the normal position.In the open position,it goes to the back and out.I was goofin around one day and thought,what if I just held it open for a day and see if I like it?.So I took off the airbox cover so I could see the servo work and got the idea to hold the valve open on the muffler and see how loud it would be.I disconnected the cable and left the servo motor plugged in,started the bike and slowly pulled the cable out to full extension.Sounded kinda cool,so I tried to figure out how to hold the cable at full extension without damaging it.I held the cable out and my brother measured the length at about 3 or 3.5 inches.We were at work so I grabbed a piece of quarter inch brake line tubing and slit it lenghtwise after we cut the right length.
I held the cable out and my brother slipped the tubing over the cable,we then lightly crimped both ends of the tubing to hold it in position.I then laid the cable near the rubber insert and popped the cover back on.
Now I had a open valve Buell stock muffler.
It sounded pretty cool,definitely louder than stock,and had less backpressure.
The bike had less low to midrange torque (I guess the muffler valve works pretty good)and I gained a decell pop which I guessed a straight through would produce.I ran it around for 10 miles or so and put it back to stock the next day.What I gained from this was an appreciation of what the guys around here say "you can't just change one thing" and have it work properly.I imagine adding a race ECM would have made it run ok,but I like the stock muffler and it's sound quite a bit.It wasn't till the other day that I actually heard my bike from a distance ridden by someone else,at the Buell dealer.The bike is so quiet when you're riding,but others hear the real noise from their perspective.I liked the stock exhaust sound and my neighbors love me for leaving it stock also.
