Sorry to say, but R&D has no plans for any exhausts for the tubers...

Hmmmm... after seeing Chaconas' on his racebike - I'll probably replace my Beson with one when it finally breaks again for the last time.

Steve - do you make a race-only pipe - lighter can but still possibly Laguna-Seca and Autobahn CC legal?

Steve,
Just a question out of curiosity, why is the first bend coming off the rear cyl. not hydroformed? Clearance issue with the frame?

Lighter is something we have been looking at for "general consumption" as we become more familiar with the XB's in the reality of long term testing. Stock stuff falls off and breaks, so again we need to be very careful how we balance "light" against both the monetary and brand image values of warranty issues.

But LS legal is something we will have to test when and if EU versions become a reality. Not sure if this is true, but have heard rumors that some bikes with stock exhausts (due to the testing method they use out there) getting flagged off the track...?

As time goes along we may offer up some EU versions that are quieter, but whether these will even make it thru LS testing we do not know...

Steve,

Great to see a manufacturer (or its agent) coming forward in a consumer forum.

What is Micron's recommendation for optimising the fuelling after fitting a Micron pipe?

Cheers, Klink

First the question of the rear cylinder:

The more "radical" the bend and the less space we have to work in, the more the "flattened" through hydroforming sections have on the effect of gas speed.

I am not part of the R&D group, so I am shooting a bit from the hip here, but the rear cylinder does not have a radical turn. So although there may be "some" shaping going on with the actual tube back there, it does not need to be like the front cylinder which is making TWO very radical turns in a very short space.

I can dig deeper with the people in R&D if you wish?

As for fuel, you want us to get in trouble with every fuel company out there...?

I cannot touch that with even a 10 foot pole without pissing off a whole bunch of people with whom we all do a lot of work with.

But I can say that in terms of the XB, Al at American Sportbike seems to have the best knowledge and solutions to date (for all the exhausts out there on the XB), and the solutions seem to be extremely complete and well thought out. Add in the people he has been training on this new product, and you have a pretty good shot at getting the fuel correct in short order.

Steve: "I can dig deeper with the people in R&D if you wish?"

IF it's not too much trouble that would be great, I don't have the system in front of me but I believe it is a little more than a 90 degree bend. Not as radical as the front pipe bends, but I would think it's substantial enough in regards to flow dynamics. It's just something I wondered about when I first unpacked the system.
Thanks,
Dave

Steve-

How do those oddly shaped bends affect the acoustic pulses traveling up & down the pipe? Maybe I should be asking if the cross sectional area is constant going from round to "squished" to round.

1st time I heard the Micron was last weekend at Homecoming. As soon as the gentleman on the Uly reved his, it sounded almost identical to the old tuber "race kit" exhaust. I love the sound of those! : )

It's also not that loud. The stainless drummer that was on norice's bike was a tad louder than the Micron(which was also quieter than I anticipated).

Really nice to hear from the source so to speak. And while I've always had an interest with the Micron from the get go, this (and the results) only confirm my decision for a future purchase.

I remember when the first look at the system was posted on this site and the wolves were ready to rip it apart. "The bends are all wrong!"..."That couldn't possibly work!"...In the end, Steve took his punches, responded in a truly professional manor, and has been vindicated with these results. Kudos to Steve and a fine exhaust system!

could the upper part of the head pipes be cannibalized into a custom pipe?

of course anything is possible, but would it be worthwhile???

I think it would be... Add a burns stainless collector right about where the stock one is...

Steve... I think it would be EXCELLENT if you made a header that was compatible with all of the other solutions. I think your header is the best one yet (obviously). I seem to remember inquiring about this some time ago and the answer was a fairly emphatic "no" though : (...

/Edit - I guess I'll just have to do it myself : ).

I was also surprised how (relatively) quiet the Micron system is. I'm not opposed
to performance exhausts making noise in pursuit of more performance, but loud for the sake
of being loud does not impress me. I was quite happy that your system was so subdued.

My Jardine's days may be numbered. If I can work out the finances.

Guys:

My reply here is with all sincerity and kindness, posts can be read wrong sometimes but this is a very friendly response.

We do appreciate all of the efforts and suggestions here, but we do have a bit of our own "ego" in all of this...

We are a multi-National, multi-million dollar company, with not only the motorcycle division you know us for, but one of the most incredible automotive divisions as well, not to mention some very strange "other" projects. We supply the exhaust systems to vehicles from your basic boring sedans to the Aston Martin Vanquish and Lotus Elise, from the Suzuki SV-650 to the Foggy Petronas FP-1. And truly, we do appreciate the thoughts here, but we have no intention of doing any work for, or with, the advance of our competitors products.

Honestly, we believe it was our coming to the market that "pushed" other products to re-design and be better, which is good for all of you. But we have a product that uses multi-million dollar manufacturing techniques, produces what we believe to be the finest power curve in the known World for this machine, and costs a mere $799 at MSRP for the entire canister AND header set. And add to this that if and when the motor wants to be "added to", the header only shines more, and separates itself even further from everything else in the World.

So it is like you are getting a complete header system for $100 if you want to think of it that way. We believe that when you assess the cost, performance level and capability for a profit, the system we have provided matches all the points and exceeds on some. (just wish it was the profit one!)

Not only is it $799 MSRP, but we can offer you 1 of these, or 1000 of these in only a few weeks time. So we are not limited by any factors to replicate, in VOLUME, the EXACT same product and the EXACT same results you have seen here. Anybody can make 1 that works really well. A few can make 100 that still hold to the design. But as with all business (and life for that matter!), taking something from "me" to "the", is an exponential explosion of costs, controls, systems and equipment which all have to be paid for somewhere.

Being able to do this is no small feat of engineering, it is 25+ years of sweat and dedication that has built a company that not only stretches the length of 2+ football fields, but stretches the boundaries of engineering design at every opportunity. For that we believe we stand alone in the World...

Please do not consider this any sort of "slam" or such, it is nothing of the sort. We are a proud bunch of beer swilling morons, but we are our own morons. That is how we like it, and how it is probably going to stay.

Come to think of it, maybe it is why we like the Buell's, the "man" himself seems to think this way...

That's probably a valid position : ). Maybe I'll just have to do it myself. That said... I doubt I have the capitol... I'd have to get lucky by about the third atempt and for the gains it probably wouldn't be worth it.

Thanks for the response.

steve,

thanks for the comments. i hope you didn't take anything i was saying wrong, i like the pipe and would love to see a tuber version, but understand the economics of it! believe me i do, being an engineering designer for a multimillion dollar company myself. my thought would be adapting an XB head pipe to fit the packaging requirements of the tubers, for my own personal use!!

Hey, if you can get it to work on the tubers, let us know and we will follow right behind you!!!

No offense was taken, I have a wife so you might know just what "real" abuse is!

Hello Steve,

Due to the size and weight involved for shipping is there a retailer in Australia where I can buy your system?

thanks.

Wazza, I PM'd the info to you.

As for the rear cylinder, we have an email in to the R&D people, but they are all just getting back from the Isle of Man races, so will not hear back until early next week.

BTW - You guys really should get more interested in the IOM races, nobody up here seems to be watching. They are without a doubt the greatest in the World!!!

I agree!
I usually have to wait until the Duke's DVD comes out to see it. The coverage here is very lacking.

Thanks Steve for your positive input, and well thought out posts.
I for one have learned a lot from your style of writing.
You explain things very well.
