I got my 06 XB9SX back yesterday from service and it is running great; more peppy and pretty smooth shifting, however...there is a very loud whirling type noise coming from the primary case. To be more specific, it is a constant noise when off the throttle, but when applying throttle and backing off, there is about a 1-2 second delay then the whirling sound gets more intense, seemingly as the revs are coming down.
What should a normal primary sound like?

Your primary chain might be a little bit too tight.

Glitch, I'm bringing the bike back in Thursday morn. Anyone have a suggestion on how much I should loosen the primary chain adjustment bolt without having to check the tension first (since bike is going in thursday)? I'm thinking along the lines of how much to loosen the bolt, just to hold me over so I can ride the bike without doing damage?

Don't do it w/o opening the inspection cover and looking. It's really easy to do. You should have gotten a T27 allen type tool in the tool bag. Two bolts. That's it.

You'll also need a crescent and an allen (I'm thinking 3/16"-5/16" or something like that). Loosen the nut on the bottom of the primary with the crescent, turn the bolt with the allen until you have the right play, hold the bolt in place while you tighten the nut.

It could be something entirely different too...

Does the inspection cover gasket have to be replaced each time the primary chain tension is checked?
Thanks for the info. I definitely don't want to ride and risk damaging the bike. The noise coming from the primary was nowhere near as loud before the service, so I know that something is up. However, the engine seems to be more powerful after the service, noticeably so.

The inspection cover should have an o-ring on it which should be good for many openings. Keep it clean and replace it when it cracks or breaks.
