1) Suddenly noticed a sound like some little piece of metal rattling around in the engine when I got home near home at slow speed.

2) The quote I got for 1000 mile service ($360) seems way high for what is basically an oil change and inspection from the manual. Is this normal? I can do everything myself except the TPS reset but I'm just too swamped.

3) I gotta leave it all day for an oil change? My car is in the shop, what a pain to have to rent a car (the shop closest to work couldn't fit me in for a week and there is no way I could have predicted the mileage a week ago). Is that normal, or is it the dealer? (and they are big and sell rice rockets, too)

4) The bike is great! Just gotta be careful not to lift the front when I'm starting after splitting the stop lights and Saturns suddenly think they can take me.

If you have the manual for your bike and some mechanical background I would recommend doing the service yourself. I keep an excel spreadsheet and receipts for my maintenance records. i have not had a problem with any warranty issues as long as I have these records in hand.

I'm looking at between 200-250 Euro on the 22nd for my 1K service... about 200miles late as of now.

DO it yourself it's not that hard ! Besides if you ride you should be able to do a few things on your own ... As for the TPS I got 4,500 on my bike and it's running great without having it done. So why fix what's not broken at this point .

Ok, if we do it ourselves what documentation do we need to avoid any warranty issues?

Kyle, You can do this -- no problems. You do need to get Dave to send you the shop manual and you'll be in business. It's a no brainer, mucho cheaper, you'll also feel much better about your ride upon completion.

Buells are dead-nutz easy to work on -- excepting FI issues.

Thanks G2, but I am just cautious about "voiding" my warranty. What documentation do I need to have to avoid a problem with the dealer should a warranty problem present itself?

Kyle, I don't know what it is like over there but in CA I believe you just need to keep receipts for the parts, oil, etc., and keeping a log of the work done helps. They have some sort of law on the books that says they can't void the warranty if service is not done by the dealer. I just don't have any time right now or I'd do it myself. And of course they can fight it a bit longer if you do have a big warranty issue.

I'm also a little worried about the noise mentioned above; it didn't do it this morning but popped once when downshifting. That could be the TPS from what I've read.

I have the time to do it... I just could use the cash for more important things. I'll do it myself, in the process of ordering everything I need from Daves now. I'll still be visiting the dealer for a TPS reset, but I doubt that'll be quite as much money.

Peterson's HD in Miami charged me $37.50 for the TPS reset on my 12R. It made a noticeable difference in the idle. Did my own engine and primary oil changes and I think the the total with the TPS came to around $76. They wanted $280 for the 1,000 mile service. Hello}

I went to a highly recommended Harley indie and paid 1/3 what the dealership wanted for the work I needed (like around 150 instead of 450). I brought my manual and parts book with me. Being a first-rate wrench, the work was first rate (a good mechanic is a good mechanic--it's the brain you're hiring, not how many of brand X he's worked on), plus when he was through, he gave me pointers on how to do the things myself if I wanted to give it a try next time.

For that rattling noise: Try checking the primary chain tensioner. A few of us have experienced that it can loosen and give off that noise. If you search past strings I'm sure you'll find more info and walkthroughs.
