The fan sucks but it sucks in ways it should not. Everyone wants to know how to stop the fan from running as much. My question is why can't someone make a silent one. It would be worth its weight in gold to me.

Is it really that big of a deal to you? I rarely notice mine until I shut it off when it's hot. Still dosn't bother me, that back cylinder needs cooling!

Maybe you should be looking for one of those right side scoops.

Wait a few years and you won't hear it anymore. I can't here my fan now unless I turn off the engine. "Loud pipes solve loud fans." I am considering a led light indicating the fan is on and/or an engine temperature gauge. Enjoy the noise while you can!!

Maybe my uly is just louder. Everyone in my riding group and on the sidewalks look my way when it starts up. Not the looks I like to get for my bike, or laughs.

Dont get me wrong the uly is the best bike I've ever owned. The past 5 yrs I had a m2 and x-1 and triumph 955i. But nothing is perfect

Wait until your bike is about 3 years old and the bearings in the fan start to go...
Sounds like I got a damn rock rolling around in my engine when I shut mine off.
(Waiting on new tires to pull it n replace it.)

I actually wondered about higher quality bearings to make the fan run quieter.
I haven't gotten serious about looking into it yet.

first question would be, does anyone know the CFM rating of the fan?

2nd Q' - why isnt it a swept blade fan that CAN run quietly?

my fan on new CityX is running less-and-less as the motor breaks in, but a QUIET fan would be a much better solution. I havent had too close of a look at it - anyone happen to know the dimensions, and/or mounting footprint to go 'shopping' for quieter alternatives?

What is a normal amount of time for the fan to run, after shutting the bike off, after riding moderately in say 70 degree temps?
My fan on my new City X (700 miles), seems to be running for a while.

Jhanz, get some more miles on that bike! 5000 miles or so it'll run less.

When I first saw this topic heading I was thinking the fan had sucked up something. Last winter while on my way to work my fan sucked up a piece of paper and stopped the fan. The fan burnt out, and I had to get a new one.

No offense to you or your style but I personally think those are fuuuuugly.

Have you asked him why his mirrors are useless? My point is that the right side air scoop works, even if Buell will not follow suit and resolve the fan nonsense.

You don't have to take the shock out, just disconnect the top, you'll have to turn the fan a little to get it out. It's a real easy job.

when you hear the fan, it's not the bearings you're hearing (unless they're toasted) -- you're hearing the fan blades move through the air -- just like you hear a helicopter's blades

there ARE designs to lessen the amount of noise generated by fan blades (and propellers and impellers et al), but most (to my limited knowledge) also negatively impact the efficiency -- trying to keep the fan small AND quiet may be mutually exclusive

My fan ran less after I switched to Synthetic oil.

My 06 Honda VFR fan is as loud if not louder than the Buell's, but only runs while the engine is running.

I like the fan running after I park it. It's a good conversation piece. Rider1: "Is your bike o.k.?, Is it overheating?" BuellRider: "No, it's such a hot bike it needs to let everyone know it's cooling itself off after a good ride!"

With the pro series race kit you cannot hear the fan at all when your riding.

The problem is how loud it is not how long it runs. I use synthetic and it runs less, but when it does run the people scatter for cover.

F-em. That's what I say and a good way to put it. If they run for cover when they hear your fan then that's their problem not yours. Now your fan NOT working, that's a problem.

I personally don't mind that much that the fan turns on when shutting the bike down. What ticks me off is when it runs in low stress situations, like putting along at 45 mph on a cool morning. I bought my Buell for that V-twin rumble sound, not a bike that sounds like a freakin' hair dryer.

I don't mind that the fan runs and cools the motor. I'm glad it does! I just wish
it was quieter. As it is it is noisier than my idling LT1 powered caprice.

there are usually compromises made for unit cost in things like bearing quality.
That and the brushes/commutator make up a fair amount of the noise of the motor.

Fan blade design is also a major contributor to the noise, I figured I'd look
into the blade shape next.

There are definitely ways to make quieter fans. Unit price is the thing that keeps
them off of the bikes. Even a nickel apiece adds up during a production run.

-----------------------------------------------

changing the shape of the fan blade will either increase noise/airflow or it will decrease the noise/airflow, there really is no way around it. it is not the motor/bearings making the noise, it is the design of the fan blades themselves. i'm sure that during the engineering part of this they were limited to a certain amount of space for the fan, which they came up with a certain size motor they can use..then they needed that motor to move "x" amount of air through that area which ment the "x" size of the blades at an angle of "x" to move that air through the area at that fan motors speed. (did that make sence?).. i guess you would need to put a bigger sized fan in w/ the blades NOT at such a drastic angle that it makes noise when running.
