I guess another option would be get a Long Shock and mount it on the Uly, then shorten the fork spring.

I've read that there are clearance issues doing that mod to the rear suspension

just out of curiosity, how different is the Uly sub-frame to the S, or Ss?

I'm using my CityX as something of an adventure / tourer, and would love to have the extra 8" or so for panniers, AND a passenger.( Figured I'd end up building a custom rear cowl, but if the Uly one +/- the Uly seat can be made to fit....)

There was an online "chat" session with Erik Buell and several engineers from Buell last year. Someone asked if the tail section and windscreen from a Uly could be adapted to a XB12S:

benandcindy: Is the tail section and windscreen is adaptable to the 12S?

John: No, they are not directly adaptable to the 12S (or 12Ss either). Due to the long travel suspension on Ulysses, we've moved some of the components in the tail around to give as much trunk space as possible. If you put the Ulysses tail components on a Lightning, the rear tire will end up hitting some of those components on hard bumps. The Ulysses windscreen also will not directly fit a Lightning due to the differences in size of the front fairings between the two bikes.

From this, it also stands to reason you can't just slap an XB12Ss shock on the rear of a Uly either.

I'd bet that it would be pretty easy to reform the undertail, or just do some cutting for clearance.
I could see it not being a direct bolt-on, but it shouldn't be that big of a modification to do it.

I personally would love to see it done, even at the factory level as a new model sport-tourer.

thanks for the info, and link - straight answers are always appreciated, even if they're 'no, you cant do that' .

FWIW, I'd love to see a factory setup, to turn a CityX into a lower, slightly smaller variant of the Uly!! I'm only 5'4" - it was the Uly that pulled me in to test ride buells, and they kicked the c**p out of all the other test rides I took, but there was no way I'd be able to ride one on-road, through traffic. ( especially so if I was 2 up) I've got a CityX with the low seat, and thats about as high as I can go....but I'm looking for a solution that'll get me a short rear cowl, and space for panniers + a passenger for 'adventure' touring.

guess its back to the CNC table for a cut shape, then hours on the english wheel to build the curve into a custom aluminum rear cowl

Thanks for the updated information.

For some reason, I still think the concept is workable, and do able.

Thanks
