Good goin' Jak, qualifying for Iron Butt, is only 1000 miles in 24 hours, if I recall. Shred and I went from Atlanta GA to Asheville NC and back in one day. No interstate, all back roads. A total of 680 miles. I'll not be doing that again!   It was fun to talk about after my butt quit hurting.  | ||

Yeah, I once rode 1,200 mi in one day, Shreveport LA to Springfield MN, did the return trip in one shot, too. Just googled The Iron Butt Rally and found out 1,000 miles in 24 hrs is the entry level event (Saddle Sore 1000). Gotta do that 11-day Iron Butt event some day soon! Me and 2 other fellow KCLW guys did 1600 miles in 28 hrs last summer...18 of the hours in the rain. All in all we did just under 4000 miles in 8 days on that trip.. | ||

That looks familiar . . . I think my dad and I passed that marker the other day. We are in Maggie Valley, NC on a little vacation trip to celebrate my college graduation. We have been riding some of the local roads, including the Blue Ridge Parkway, and tomorrow we are going to ride the Dragon and the Cherohala so I am pretty excited! It is beautiful up here - if anyone is even somewhat close and has never ridden here you should!!! | ||

A friend of mine is really into the Iron Butt stuff. There is now a very LONG waiting list - the participants are chosen by lottery with preference given to past finishers. There is a book that is basically Ron Ayers account of his Iron Butt experience a few years ago. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1884313094/102-1102791-4299308?v=glance&n=28315 5 Personally, I respect the sense of adventure that these guys have and the dedication. I went to watch the start of the Utah 1088 which is a 24-hour event. Hundreds of people with bikes modified with GPS, extra gas tanks, etc. to facilitate long rides - it was pretty interesting. The point of these rallies is not just to ride the miles, but to pick up "bonus" points by getting to certain destinations along the way. Some of these destinations are hundreds of miles out of the regular path. Usually you have to have a polaroid picture or a dated receipt or something to prove you were there. The thing that bothers me is that the bonus things often require risky or unsafe practices because of the "hurry factor" where there are timed checkpoints. Worse, the Iron Butt finishers report unbelievable fatigue and they still keep riding on public roads with traffic. One guy was so tired he stopped to gas up and get a bite to eat and caught himself trying to put his sandwich into the gas tank. Several others dropped their bikes because they forgot to put the kickstand down or did other similar things. It bugs me anytime people will drive on the roads with others while in a significantly "impaired" state. But, I gotta admit I often get the urge to just RIDE SOMEWHERE - but I guess I would prefer Peter Egan style. | ||

Back in 2004, I did 770 miles on the Firebolt, Denver to Sturgis and back in 14 hours (a glorified T-shirt run) Last year I went from just south of Calgary, Alberta Canada to Denver, straight thru on my Sportster. 1008 miles, about 18 hours. That ride was motivated by lack of motel rooms in Douglas Wyoming! I had no intention of doing an IronButt length ride when I rolled out of the hotel at 9am. | ||

not to mention hitting the twisties ! It was ALL twisties, that's why what would have been a six hour 300 mile drive into a sixteen hour 680 mile ride. | ||

Did 986 one day riding the back roads from Placerville to San Francisco to San Bernardino. Hard core, short lunch in Montery and lots of gas stops. 12 hours or so average on the GPS 78mph. I wanted off the 9R about 100 miles from home (badly). |
