Riding yesterday and I go to hit the throttle and she dies. I pull over, turn it off and the ignition is on I switch the red start button on and I do not hear my fuel pump relay like I always do. Just a tick is all I hear. She turns over and when I give it a little throttle which I know I don't need to you can hear it gasping air but no fuel. What could this be? Fuel Pump, Relay switch of some kind? Still familiarizing myself with this bike so all help is greatly appreciated. | ||

Does the 04 have a kickstand switch? sounds like the same kind of symptoms. | ||

Diablobrian, Can Xbeau12s pull a code on the 04 by jumping 1 and 2 on the data link connector? | ||

the o4 12 r/s do not have the kick stand switch.i don't know about the 9s/r. | ||

If you put the bike in 5th gear and turn on the key and turn on the ignition and SLOWLY push the bike forward the fuel pump should cycle. Be VERY careful not to jump start the bike! Cover the clutch just in case. If the fuel pump does not cycle then let us know. | ||

Found out what it was. Kind of stupid but simple. The ECM fuse blew on me. Why would this have blown? My bike has the Pro Race kit on it so would that have something to do with it? The Race ECM might have malfunctioned? The bike only has 2900 miles on it right now so I wouldn't think anything major would be wrong. Maybe I just need an adjustment. I'll wait for some replies here but I'm going to take it to the Buell shop at Black Hills Harley Davidson/Buell and see what they come up with. | ||

According to the xb12x (Uly) manual the ECM 10 amp fuse only has one purpose. It keeps the ECM alive even when the ignition switch is off. It is a yellow wire from the fuse box to pin 5 on connector 11 at the ECM. Look at the fuse and see if it is a dead short (smoky burn through) or a slow (less smoky burn through) on the fuse. A dead short of the yellow wire to ground is the only thing that would cause a dead short. It is hard to believe that the ECM stay alive circuit would pull more than 10 amps. I would eye ball the wiring from the fuse box to the ECM which is about 6 inches. Remember my data is from a xb12x manual so it may vary. | ||

Also, make sure the seat is not pushing down on the ECM and wearing the wires (maybe shorting to ground). Pay special attention to pin 5 /Yellow wire on connector 11. | ||

Look under the shock adjuster mount, too. I found some wires chafing there. | ||

I would just replace the fuse and ride the bike, if it blows again then definitely take it into the dealer. The ecm fuse for the 04 Lightning models is rated at 7.5A. It's called "keep alive" ? It's powered at all times even with the key off...interesting 7.5A fuse drawing <2mA with the engine off, it must have another purpose, as Xbeau has pointed towards. | ||

I'll check any wires hanging out around there. I did take it to the car wash and some water could have made it's way around there but highly unlikely since I've ridden in the rain before. I'm just going to keep an extra since I'm using my extra 7.5A now. Thanks for all your help and I'll always come to the board first when I have a problem! Time to ride! |
