I have been sneeking around on this forum for awhile now, but today I have become a Buell owner. I bought an 06 Lightning Ss. I have been drolling over Buell's for a long time but the older tube frame models had issues, so I could never see myself on one. When the Lightning long came out I new it was time. I have always had inline four or three cylinder bikes so this is going to take some getting used to. My first ride from the dealership was in the rain so I could not really get a feel for it. I hope to be modding this thing soon so I will need some good tips.

It is my opinion that the "break in" procedure is very important. My other recommendation is to order a VDSTS from American SportBike or find someone near you that has one so you can do the TPS reset w/o going back to the dealer. Welcome and congrats!!

Welcome aboard. What color is it?

It is black. I almost bought the Valencia orange, but the black is just meaner.

I'll post a pic as soon as I can.

welcome! and all dyno pulls show black is faster

Them's FIGHTING words!

See, you're comparing dyno results to "real world"

Everybody knows BLUE is faster on the streets.

(don't ask about my racebike color selection)

Figured we ought to start argument about SOMETHING!

Nope, white is obviously faster.

Being the most reflective color It reflects away more of the negative energy that would otherwise slow you down.

Why do you think NASA paints all of it's aircraft white?

BRIAN- (slaughter using his condescending, "I'm superior voice") - you're just making that up. NASA paints vehicles white because the paint is from low-bidders. I'm sure blue would have cost more.

THERE!

I sure told you!

Nope grey is the low bidder color.

You can mix basically anything together and get grey.
That's why the Airforce paints most of it's planes grey,
the marine corp paints 3/4 of it's aircraft grey,
And the Navy paints all of it's aircraft and even it's ships grey.
(I'm a 6 year veteran of the USN)

So grey is certainly the low bidder color.

I maintain the superiority of white.
I will give you the fact Blue IS faster than black,
except for our race bike, and it's only half black.
(the White stripe is the source of the speed)

Welcome to Buell Drwood!

Mill finish is the low bid color, with the explaination..."Oh, well that's an intentional design effect"..."Don't worry, we won't charge for that!"

Oh and on a serious note - you MUST let the motor warm up. Seriously.

I start it and while it's idling, I'll put on my gloves, jacket and helmet and give it another minute. Ride it off easy.

Don't just light it up and haul a**. ANY aircooled motor needs attention to proper warmup.

"..always had inline four or three cylinder bikes..."

Staying with recommended break in regimen will introduce you to the joys of having useable torque and HP spread out over a much higher range.

My basic warm up is to only use the enrichener for a few seconds and to hold a steady 1,800-2,000 RPM for two minutes (maybe one minute if I am in a real hurry). No throttle blips when cold because it pops back through the carb.

My basic around town riding regimen is 2,000 to 3,500 RPM and very little shifting. On the road, 3,500 RPM gets me over 70 in 5th gear and you can leave it in 5th from 2,500 up if you do slower roll ons. A downshift will give quicker acceleration and my mental rule of thumb is that I pick up about 1,000 RPM for each downshift.

Some of the guys that make the transition to Buells from rice rockets seem to me to want use way too much of the higher RPM range and way too often. I can't help to equate that with more wear and tear and shortened engine life.

Jack
