OK, I had my muffler for a 2 weeks for Kevin at Drummer. I took this opportunity to change the oil, tranny fluid, etc, etc. I got my manuals out and noticed my suspension was way off. The shock spring was loaded to the 1 posistion and I was having some serious brake diving issues prior to the 2 week down time. So I looked up the chart in the book, and adjusted everything on the suspension to the GRW for 190-200lbs. I am the 5th dial on the shock and every adustment was backed off and turned CW to the number of turns the manual states.

My problem is, it seems like I feel every small crease in the road. Small bumps and creases that I dont remember feeling prior to making the adjustments, I feel now. When I am riding, I feel most of the road imperfections in my gut. The front end doesn't appear to picking up all of the road input but what do I know?? I think I noticed an improvement in the way the bike corners when I made the adjustments. Actually, for the first several days after the adjustments, I don't remember feeling all of this negative input.

My question is what do I adjust? How do I get rid of the bouncy feeling in my gut whenever I go over a small road imperfection? Thanks for your help!!

First off,when you adjust the comp and rebound you gently seat the adjusters and then back them out the number of turns the manual says.
Sounds like you did it backwards?

Yeah... Turn them clockwise (like your tightening them) until they lightly seat. Then back them out the suggested number of turns.

after reading this i went out to check all of my settings....the dealer said they would adjust everything before i picked it up back when i bought it in 03...yeah right everything was off. after adjusting everything the bike feels like a whole different machine....i have never been happier with my bike!! next will be the pirelli diablos!!

The dealer is supposed to set up the suspension WITH YOU when you pick up the bike.

My dealer didn't. I set mine up when I got home. I would wager that most dealers don't. Dave, you are exceptional. You need to move to a dealer down here in FL.

Have you checked your tire pressure?

When I put a little too much pressure in the Scorpion Syncs, it feels just like you describe. Recommended pressure for the stock Dunlops is 36F/38R. Recommended pressure for the Syncs(stock on SX) is 34F/36R. Not sure about the Diablos, but I would try dropping the pressure just a bit as well as softening up the suspension a hair. I run suspension on the soft side due to the poor road conditions in places around here, but it doesn't take much on the adjustments to make a big difference.

If you lose track of the adjustments made, it's easy to reset them to factory weight settings and start again.(I did twice before I was comfortable with it).

Crap, I think I did do it backwards??? I cant remember! Basically, you turn everything CW until the set screws lightly seat - then back off CCW the number of turns the manual states, correct??

Another question, how do you guys/girls feel about the recommended factory settings. I am still a fairly new rider (this is my 2nd season) and am unsure of how the bike should feel when properly set-up. It is going to take time and experience for me to learn what feels right. As of now, I just want to dial in the factory settings and ride, unless there is a better set-up than the factory recommended settings. I am 5"11 and weigh about 180-185. Thanks!!

One more question - moving which way on the tail shock makes the tail feel softer, closer to the 1st detent or closer to the 7th detent? Thanks again!!

Yes, you have the comp and rebound setting method correct. Turn the screws in til they seat and then out the correct number of turns according to the manual
I think the manual settings are pretty good for street/backroad riding.

The rear shock preload is notch 1 (bottom) least amount, notch 7 (top) is the most.
