I have the chin fairing off my d&d muffler, and I got to thinking that I like the look without it installed. Only problem is the muffler has a huge plate that sticks out and comes within like a couple of inches of the front tire and has the mounting tabs for the chin fairing on it.. I was wondering if I could just have someone cut off that plate? Would this effect the ability to jack the bike on the muffler? Has anyone ever done this? It would make it easier to change the oils and get to the stuff down there too. Thoughts?

In my opinion, a mistake. D & D's are pretty pricey, if you want, it would probably be wiser to sell it & get a Jardine, or Vance & Hines. That way you would accomplish your goal without trashing, or devaluing a good exhaust system.
PS. Those plates won't be in the way of any oil changes you might do.

If you cut the plate off the front, you can kiss the ability to jack up your bike (MC/ATV jack) goodbye. IMHO I wouldn't do it.

Dan,
I live in Fort Worth the home of D&D and took my exhaust to David Rash the owner about doing just that. He recommended that I leave the triangular piece of flat steel from where the pipes split back to where the diameter increases. I have some rough pics I’ll post tomorrow. Not finished yet but I’ll keep this thread updated as I go. I think I’m going to like it, it will round of the front following the engine’s line. As for jacking I have a few ideas, I’ll let you know what happens.

I used an angle grinder with a cut off wheel, the smaller the better, 4” is the smallest I could find to fit my grinder. Cut the lip off on the bottom of the plate first, it makes it easier to mark and work with. The headers are welded in 3 places to the bottom plate on mine, at the split in front and on each side at the rear. I plan to extend the weld along the header pipes and the bottom plate. Then I’ll use a grinding wheel, file and emery cloth to smooth it out before painting. I have some boat projects going on now but I’ll keep you updated as I go. Good Luck.
