Hi Was out for a ride, stopped to go in a shop. Walking back to me XB9s (03) when i noticed the front muffler strap/ jubilee clip hanging off. So I nursed the bike home, stripped of the chin fairing and yep the strap had indeed snapped. Having had a look at the work shop manual, it’s not clear if I can just replace the strap OR I will need to remove the Muffler to replace it. (Bummer of a job just to replace the strap). The old broken strap did not come out that easy which makes me wonder if the new one will go back in with the muffler on the bike? Any info you have would be a help Thanks Lee | ||

Mine broke and as I recall I just took off the chin fairing and swapped out the strap....No biggie Larry | ||

Thanks Larry its was just that i had trouble getting the old one out there did not seem enough of a hole in the mount to get the new one in. feel better now, as the muffler removel sounded like a hour or more to do. thanks again lee | ||

For the front strap you will need to remove the can and the mount. There's not enough room to slip either end through. Please don't ride the bike w/o the front strap next time  . | ||

M1 may be right...but worse case scenario is to loosen the back 2 straps and the header clamp to get the clearance you need... Larry | ||

While you're at it, you may want to swap out the front exhaust studs too. It may seem like overkill, but without the strap, the weight of the muffler is supported by those studs which might weaken them. I can tell you from experience they're easier to get out when they're not sheared off, plus they're cheap and aren't hard to change out. The front strap breaking is what lead to one of my studs shearing, and I wouldn't have known about the strap except for the exhaust leak. | ||

Nope. You need to loosen the mounting bracket that the strap goes through. The front strap doesn't work like the rear ones. There's no way to just slip it on the bracket. It goes through the bracket and with the bracket mounted there isn't enough room between the bracket and the crank case to slip the strap through. You'll need to drop the can (Four nuts if your front strap wasn't broken, three since it is), remove the front bracket, slipt the strap through the bracket, reverse... | ||

M1 I didn't have to remove the bracket to install my front strap...the end did go through the mount with no issue... Lee, I would try the install without removing the can, and then go from there...I bought my strap from Daves and it looked identical to the one I removed...so it should work for you as well... M1combat is right. I just put my new Drummer on and I forgot to put my strap on though the bracket that attaches to the motor. Had to drop the muffler back down then take the bracket off the motor again then put the strap though it then back together again. Oh well, but it back together now.  | ||

Do all muffs have a front strap on? I don't have a front strap on my d&d is that normal? | ||

I recommend not torquing the front or rear straps up like the manual says, use feel instead, but that's just MO. I've done about 5 muffler changes in 2 years on my XB12S and no broken straps and no loose straps either. | ||

The D+D doesn't use a strap, it has a bracket instead so you are fine Sik I have the straps in stock if you need one. It's about 25.00 call my cell today as I will be at the factory. 319-504-9294 if you want to order one | ||

It's a little tight in there, but I was able to get straps in there without taking anything else off. Just disconnect so that it's not in a loop, thread it through and what I actually did was put it on so that I no longer had to use a 20 foot extension (lol) to get to the screws. The screws on mine are now closer to the bottom, out of the way a little instead of on top. | ||

Mine broke too on my old '03 XB9. I've always contended that the torque spec. on that strap was too tight. | ||

I wonder if it depends on the MY? I'm absolutely certain that on my '04 XB12R I couldn't get the front strap through the mounting bracket w/o removing it. | ||

You know what, I didn't realize he was talking about the front strap. I can't remember if I was able to do the front strap without removing anything. | ||

This was buggin' me, because I was so sure I didn't have to remove the bracket...so I went down and removed the front strap...It's a close fit but my strap does go through the mounting bracket without removing or loosening it... Larry | ||

Hi Guys Thanks for all the info. Got me new strap, had ago like you said Larry, BUT no good the gap that i've got to put the new one through is only about 1/8" but need about 1/2" at least to get it through. I had to strip the whole thing off. will give it a coat of paint while it's off, it's starting to rust. will not torque (thanks Jerseyguy, Opto) when i reassemble. Thanks for the offer "Daves" have already got one it was £26.11 (uk) (about $48) rip off britten. do you ship to the UK, must be cheeper evan inc shipping? Thanks again. Lee | ||

A tip that Kevin gave me and I'll pass it along. Clean that surface really well on the muffler and header where the two connect. Get a sensor safe, high temp silicone (copper works) and after putting them together and before you clamp, apply a beed around the muffler top and in the slots good, then clamp down. This will help prevent leaks. It takes 24 hours to cure, so you may want to let it sit for a day. Man, I was sure you could have gotten it in there. You only need slip the non-screw end in there and that's only a mm thick, how did it not fit in a 1/8 inch slot? | ||

Shea both ends on the one that broke, and the new one are the same size, there is not a flat end. Lee | ||

No flat end... One has the receiver for the bolt, the other has the bolt... | ||

One end has a loop spotwelded to the strap with the bolt on the other is the same ie it has a loop spotwelded with a nut on a tube. so both ends are the same size. ie no flat end. you can not remove either the bolt or the nut as they are were assembled prior the spotwelding. the one ,ones you have must be differnt ? I can't believe those straps are breaking. They look pretty solid. Have you guys removed your straps before? I am wondering if they are not put on exactly flat against the pipe that it creates tension on an angle and makes a weak spot eventually. | ||

in my case i was definitely asking for it.. . i've swapped pipes 4 times and should have replaced the straps. i needed to order new ones but just procrastinated. | ||

I have taken my exhaust off about 15 times have 15k on it and have not had a problem, I think it has to do with how tight they are, I do a light but tight torque that I judge with feel. |
