Dude cuts open oil filters so you can see how they're made.

That is why I use Napa Auto filters, made by WIX. That is a neat test.

Good day.

I returned all of the frams on my garage shelf after reading that article last year.

This guy's choice in the end was the Honda OEM filter...

Except for knocking FRAM, how is this useful to Buellers? i.e. he doesn't test Harley OEM, and most of the ones he does cut up are not likely to be used on Buell anyway. Is there anybody else cutting up the filters that (collectively) we actually use?

My beef with that and similar sites is they make wild assumptions about "better". This has cardboard, so it sucks. This has a spring loaded anti drain back so it is better then one that is not spring loaded.

Short of exhaustive engineering analysis, I don't know how you can reach these conclusions about "better". Sure the cardboard will ball up in your hand when you rub it, that's why there is a metal case around the cardboard end caps to keep you from rubbing it. Will the cardboard have a statistically significant failure rate in any statistically significantly common usage scenarios? That is a whole different question.

It's cool to look inside all the different filters though.

Well, I wanted a filter that I would feel good about leaving in for 10,000 miles, as the Amsoil MCV change interval is double the mfr's recommended. Almost bought a Fram, and if I had, I'd have changed it based on the article and bought instead what I actually did buy, the K&N 177, which I got through my nearby Advance Auto Parts (also got my NGK 5545 plugs there; nice not to have to pay minimum mail order shipping for small quantities of consumables). I'm OK with leaving the K&N in there for 10,000, it being one of my goals to have a service routine where I do maintenance only once a year. But anyway the article was all relevant to my situation.

Wal-Mart oil filters compare to Bosch for 1/2 the price.

I use the supertech filters on my lawnmower. I'd use them on my Buell but I like the way the Mobil1 oil filter looks.. Tuber

I use oem VW mann oil filters with Amsoil Bypass filters on my cars.

10k miles seems like a LONG time for an oil change on an air cooled motor. Even for full synthetic with a heavy additive package.

I've went 20k on my diesel car. A used oil test showed that the oil was still good to use.

If you really want to know how your oil and engine are holding up. 10-20 bucks will have your used oil tested. I get mine done at the local CAT dealer.

The last time that I examined them, the Walmart Super Tech 4967 filter appeared to be exactly the same as the one manufactured for the Buell by Champion, the company that makes them for Buell. Of course this can change at any time, but at two bucks apiece, I bought a number of them.

While you are at Walmart, you can also pick up your Mobil One motor oil and primary oil at a very reasonable price, thus killing two birds with a single projectile.

Have you cut both open to verify this statement? Because I have and they are not comparable. You get what you pay for with the supertech a relabeled piece of 5hit fram.}

I have not personally cut them open.

Just a visual compare of the two side by side. Plus I've read about other people who said thev'e cut them open and compared them.

I use them on my 500.00 old snapper mower. So no biggy.

kurosawa, if i may inquire, what is your reason for wanting to run 10,000 miles on your motor oil? i am wondering what mode of thinking would lead one to this extreme of deferred maintenance.
for myself, i find that an oil change takes under 10 minutes, and it gives me great peace of mind to install fresh engine and transmission lubricants 3 or 4 times per summer.

Probably because he knows that todays MODERN oil, oil filters, air filters and engine techonlogy.. Does not require such an "old school" thoughts.

Its common for German cars to have 10-30k oil changes.. Been that way for years. Its just we Amerincans are brainwashed into think you must change your oil every 3,000 miles.

I've seen used oil testing that shows that 5k oil changes are worse than 10k oil changes. It takes some time for the oil to stabalize. Now this is cars.. I've never tested my bike oil.

Soon my car will have Elf CRV oil that meets Audi 506.01 specs and has been proven good for 30k and an increase of 5% mpg. Cost --sit down.. 13.50 per liter!! But if the math is done with the longer oil change and increase in MPG it evens back out.

I hate to use more oil than necessary - the cost and labor are nothing compared to keeping the bike in top condition, but then there's the issue of resources.

I use only synthetic (Mobil 1), recycle all my old oil and change at the recommended intervals. Buell's recommendations are conservative, synthetic is much better, so changing more often than that seems to be wasting resources. Even if changing tires cost the same as an oil change, I wouldn't change them every month!

Just my choice/opinion of course.

Thanks Ryker77, testing at 5000 sounds like a prudent idea, also 7500 and 10000. That'll tell me what I need to know.
