2003 XB9S with a loud fuel pump. Is it normal for them to be a little loud (whirring noise)? Or is it getting ready to take a sh!t on me. If it does need replaced, where is it? How difficult is it to replace. I remember hearing about some issues with these but I cant find anything in the knowledge vault about this. |

Mine is like that too on my 03 xb9s with 6800 miles. I was wondering the same thing. The pump is in the frame behind the left riders foot peg. You need a cheap little puller to get it out. Oh yeah and you have to remove the swing arm too.....uggghh |

The 03-04 fuel pumps are noisy due to cavitation, an air bubble in the pump impeller. they were re-designed in 05 to quiet them down, but it has no effect on function, at least on the street. The 05 pumps also re-arranged the fuel pick-up to prevent starvation under hard braking like that seen on the race track. Don't worry unless you start having problems with lean surging. |

Another sign of a bad fuel pump, at least this was in my case, is a lot of pinging. One does not have to remove the swingarm... just the wheel and unbolt the shock. (along with depressurizing the fuel system) BTW... now that my bike is no longer running as lean (due to good fuel pressure), this thing has become a beast. Acceleration is much more brutal, yet it is also smoother. |

How much can I expect to pay for a fuel pump and what year should I get. Do the new ones fit and 03? |

18,000 miles and it still whines. Kinda like my ex. Oh that was pretty funny right there... |

I am getting this pinging too on occasion.. Sent my Dobeck back for a re-programming. Gonna see if I can adjust it right to get rid of the pinging and if that doesn't work, I am gonna check into a fuel pump, I DO NOT need to be stranded somewhere. |

Yes Kdan, that was pretty funny... I'm glad someone else asked this, mine does the same thing and I was debating starting another thread about it. I need to wait and make a list of things instead of asking one question at a time. Glad to hear this is normal, I was getting worried. |

The new pump should fit the 03s I did not have to pay for mine, and I did not have to install it as the dealership did it for me under warranty without charging a dime... |

My Uly has made a whirring noise since day one but it seems to go away once warmed up. It seems to be coming from the left side. Is this something I should be concerned about? |

I wouldn't worry about your Uly. The 03-04 xb's fuel pumps howl at start up. |

My pump on the 06 is loud as hell too. I am not sure if it goes away when warm, but i do remember hearing it whine as the bike was running a couple of times. |

the pump on my 04 can be heard over my race pipe when idling! just take it as character and ride the thing. buells make all sorts of noises, learn to enjoy them. passion is rarely "clean". |

shea, you need to come out for one of our rides, or meet us halfway. york isn't too far away. maybe a trip to the york assembly plant for the "tour" is in order. |

You're from NY? That's quite a long ride from York. I think it takes about 3-4 hours just to get to the state line of NY. I would def consider meeting you guys half way though. If you're ever in York, let me know or if you plan to. I work long hours and lots of over time, but with some notice, I can usually switch hours or request off days. |

Fuel pump whine is not bad when it is in season. We will serve no whine before it's time. Stretch |
