i've gotten the "headlight is out" too when i first got firebolt, so i just for most part just leave the high beam on all the time. not sure if its a good idea to do that though.

I have gotten the Ducati statement no less than 6 times. A few times when I lived in NC and now a few times since moving to San Dieog. It's rather amusing to me when people ask me that. Then they get the explanation of what it really is.

I've only had the Ducati comment a handful of times, but I used to get inquiries about what the bike was constantly. I've noticed a complete difference in the public's perception of my M2 compared to my XB though. The M2 had way more "what is that?" comments, while the XB seems to draw more of the "does it handle as good as they say" type comments. It seems that the XB is much more widely recognized.

I have a Ducati too, so if I get asked, I guess I can take them back to the garage and give them a lesson in telling the difference between a 90 degree L-twin and a 45 degree V-twin. : )

Come on guys, lighten up on people when they guess wrong. We need to all be ambassadors of good will for Buell.

To put it all in perspective, think of some of the incredibly stupid things you've said over the years trying to open a conversation with a good looking stranger. It's like your brain gets all tongue tied by the beauty of the thing and something wrong pops out.

Wow.. so friendly.

How about saying "No, it is a Buell."
Then the other person might just say,"Oh, sorry, I wasn't sure. But hey, that is a nice bike!" Rather than thinking "Jeez, what an a$$hole"}

I carry around the brochures with the CD to share with people that are interested in them. I keep a few in my tank bag. Really surprises people that someone like them that much.

The usual ones I hear are . . .

"Cool, that's the bike I saw on the Discovery Channel!"

or the 17 year old punk with a 600 at a filling station that expresses shock when he finds out it was a Buell that blew past him in the twisties a few miles back.

At a predominantly Harley gathering last year this woman asked her S.O. what it was and he said it was "some kinda off brand Harley". I just said to her "it's what a Harley would look like if it could go fast". Then I ambassadorized my ass off. She was real interested in the girlfriends Blast, but her S.O. proceeded to tell her she'd be getting a 883 when she was "ready". I started to ask her if he pulled all her strings before my most excellent girlfriend redirected me.

I had a "Motorcycle" person once read the air box cover badging and tell me it's really a German bike. Porsche designed it you know, at the same time they were designing and building the V-Rod for Harley.

I've been accused of riding 'Jap Crap' at a local H-D boutique.

I've been cussed out for spending way too much money on something that's just too damn slow.. Only minutes later loosing him in the twisties to the tune of several minutes.

My Buell has been called Italian, German, British, Australian and Japanese. A 'one off' custom. An experimental model? and lastly, a beginner or 'lil girls bike.

I think I'm gonna start saying it's a Hyundai. Then I'll ride away happily knowing there's some clown out there earnestly trying to convince his buddies that Hyundai is now making a bike that sounds just like a Harley.

"I get "hey is that a buell?, wow looks good in real life. When are they going to put a decent motor in those things?""

In real life??? They don't look so good in your nightmares eh? Anyway...

I always say "They already did. You wanna go run the spars just for fun with me?"

The punks that say BS like that generally have 2" strips on their rear tires though so I generally look real close at the tires and then stand up and look them right in the eye and say "Pfffft". For some reason they generally get upset... Maybe I'm an ? Funny thing though... The people who at least look like they could dance never say a word about the engine except "Damnit Dude... every time I got close you were messing me up... I couldn't hear my bike." Excuses, excuses...

I get asked every once in a while if I built it myself (I ride with hand built old school choppers fairly regularly) and I always say "No, but the moment I laid eyes on it I realized that if I had the engineering team that Erik Buell has then this is the bike I would have built anyway... I don't, so I just bought it."

This is how normally goes for me:
Them: Is that a ( struggling for the word) Buealla?? I heard about but never saw one
Me: It's a Buell
Them: Wow how many cc is it?
Me: 1200
Them : Huh that is very big bike for such a little girl can you keep up with the boys
Me: Nope i don't keep up i just pass them.

Or i get a lot of:
That is one sexy bike, what is it? Italian made or something?
I still can't get over that cause it says American Motorcycle right in front of their faces, I just want to smack them some days but i smile wide and tell them all about it.

I love me buell

I've yet to receive an ill-informed comment about my Firebolt. The majority of motorcyclists know instantly what it is and while they may make some disparaging remarks, it never gets confused with a Ducati. Jeez, if you ever park a Firebolt next to a 749/999 about the only thing they have in common is two wheels .

Similarly, the non-badass contingent of the Harley crowd are usually quite interested, especially those who are pursuing the fruitless goal of making a 'performance' Harley.

General awareness of Buells in the UK is good, even to the extent of performance outlets posting 'No Buells' notices in their shop window

The other day at lunch I had a guy ask if the thing hanging under the engine was an auxiliary fuel tank. I explained it was a muffler and he seemed very confused. He also had no idea Buell existed.

It's kind of funny in a way that here in the region where they are made we still run into people who either have never heard of Buell or thought they went out of business.

My '04 XB12S has been Line-X'd so there are no badges anywhere on the bike other than on the triple. I live in Edmonton Canada and there are under 10 Buells in the city of 750,000 people. I get every comment above and others..funniest one I can recall..
standing around yakking with a bunch of rockets I ride with at a local bike hangout when a guy that coulda been the missing link walks over and grunts "that yours" pointing a stub that used to be a finger at my ride.

"sure is" I say. Pretty cool ride, Harley should make something like that...

Just about got killed when the coffee I was drinking came out my nose and all over his frilly chaps...

have you ever had anyone ask you if you are sure its 1200? (in my case) when i was asked the size and said 1200, thats what they said. its not like i would know what size my bike is or anything. i just bought it for the wheels (lol j/k)
One day i pulled up at a red light one and the guy beside me pointed and said "is that nitrous?" i assume he was referring to the muffler. of course i answered. i've also been mistaken for a ducati (even on the blast). this makes me want to go back out and ride. you all are responsible for the mileage on my baby. i get done riding, come on here, and get the urge to ride more.

I've only had positive comments about my 9R. The sport bikers at the local hangout think it's cool. Girls like the way it vibrates.
When asked, I tell non-biker people it's a Harley-engined sportbike.

After 2 days no-one has asked... but everyone looks! Had a sales clerk's window pressed up the gas station window, after i started her up. He rides a harley and must have recognized the sound, not sure if he put 2n2 together though.
Plus, I had some guy climbing over his wife while at a stoplight from the passenger seat to look at the bike that was rumbling next to him. I simple flipped up my mirror iridium visor looked smiled, shrugged my shoulders and then left him in my exhaust notes as my friend (R6) and I "raced" off to the next stoplight.

So no, in my two days of ownership I haven't received any questions, only stares. Not that I give anyone time to ask, the weather never waits, and neither does the roads that need to be ridden.

So I roll up to a bar last night and back in next to a bunch of Hogs. As I cut off my engine I hear
"DoooD, that's a Buell!"

Small crowd gathers and once again Piglet is the center of attention as I do my best to describe all the cool buell engineering.

Yeaaaa, that's cool

i have gone to numerous jap bike dealerships just so they will eventually go outside and take a look....then they ask what it is and i explain the gas is in the frame, etc, etc and they look dumbfounded. i love it when people who are into/sell sport bikes are amazed by my 9S, especially when i tell them i get the handling of a ducati for 1/3 the price!!

I went to AutoZone last saturday, on my Reactor Yellow M2. On the way, a guy in pickup next to me honks and makes a hand motion that looked like "do a wheelie" . I didn't just laughed. At the store I'm the only customer, unbelievably, so park right in front. Next guy comes in, oh what is that? Tell him, he starts talking about his old Norton, and then we start comparing rubber mounts, etc. Next customer comes in, "what is that, a BMW", obviously an idiot, but we started talking to him about engine configurations and stuff.

I've gotten more questions and comments in half a dozen rides on my M2, than 20 years on my Yamaha. I guess it just looks friendly or inviting or something.
