Bought a used ulysses with 4,000mi. Owner said it was #28 sold. Have almost put 1000mi on it an going in for 5000mi service.

I love the bike, but it runs much rougher at slow speeds than I expected. Very abrupt throttle response, jerky, surging, I have to ride with clutch partly in to get it to ride smoothly out the driveway (500') and in slower traffic. Bike only seems to smooth out above 4000rpm. Is this normal and just takes getting used too?

Also suspension seems very twitchy. I'm about 180lbs. and have set to factory specs with compression set to lowest setting front and rear. Bike still seems like its hitting micro bumps at speeds under 60. But seems to handle large bumps easily.

5dogs - Welcome to badweb, it's good to have you here. Glad you like the bike too. I love mine.

You are not the only one complaining about surging at low speeds. Read this thread:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/186874.html

There is some debate as to whether it's normal or not.

I think the twitchyness is a normal thing and is caused by a combination of the tires and wind. It's been reported that the Perillo Scorpion Syncs (OEM tires on the CityX) make this problem go away. I've also noticed that if I tuck down and hold the grips very loosely the twiching goes away. This makes me think it has a lot to do with wind hitting my forarms and wiggling the bargs.

You might find more Uly specific knowledge on the "big bad and Dirty" section.

I believe 5dogs is lugging/bogging the engine at low speed / low rpm.

If more detail can be supplied - what rpm do you notice this issue? if it is at anything at ~1000rpm or lower then you do need to slip the clutch for that type of speed.

Did you come from 4 cylinder bikes? I did and that was the first thing I notice - low rpm lugging / bogging. At first I was thinking it was a problem with the bike but after extensive research, I and other badweatherbiker's concluded that I was lugging the engine. NO GOOD. Just slip the clutch and everything is fine.

I weight about the same as you and I took about 3 days to set up the suspension properly. Adjusting one parameter at a time. The suspension is extremely sensitive to adjustments comparing to other bikes. That's was another thing I noticed when I first got the bike. Once it is adjusted to your weight you will lover the bike more than you already do!

Trust me, there is no issue with your bike.
