Wow - got away with one today, but what a wakeup call!

So here's the deal - I've owned 4 Harleys over the past 12 years, and just bought my first Buell (XB12s) about a month ago. In 12 years of riding Harleys, I've never got a ticket or even been pulled over.

Anyway - today I was out on a ride about 30 miles from my house, on a two lane highway with posted 55mph speed limit. My lane opened up into a passing lane, so I pulled out and gunned it to pass two other cars in front of me. Just as I was thinking about how much fun this damn thing is, I see a CHP coming at me in the other direction. It turns out to be two CHP cars, one behind the other. Just as they pass me in the other direction, I see the back one's lights come on, and he hits his brakes. Oh shit, he's turning around and coming after me! Great, I've had the bike one month, and already here comes my first ticket!

So he comes up behind me with lights flashing and I pull over. He says he pulled me over for going 78 in a 55. The front car had me on radar at 78, and radioed the second car to turn around and stop me. I say (very nicely) that I had NO IDEA that was going anywhere near that fast, and that I just bought the bike a few weeks ago, I wasn't used to it yet, blah, blah, blah.

He takes my license & registration back to his car and pulls out his ticket book, and now I know I'm screwed. All of the sudden the second CHP car pulls up along side him, shaking his head "No" to the cop that's writing me a ticket. He then closes the ticket book, brings my license back, and tells me to take it easy and have a nice day!!!

I have NO IDEA what that was all about. BUT - I feel like I just won the lottery! It was a definite wake up call about how easy and quickly these bikes go from 55 to 80 with just a flick of the wrist. I'll definitely be watching the speedo a bit closer from here on out...

In CA it used to be they had to have the speed "locked" in the radar gun and be able to show it to you in order to ticket you.

Hearsay (the other officer saw it) isn't usually going to fly in court, unless the Judge is in a REALLY bad mood.

Glad you got off of this one. Be careful out there!

It was your LUCKY Day!!!

Now Keep riding.

And try not to go at, or under, the speed limit. You'll give us a bad name if you start to ride slow!

I know the feeling!!

Was running late for a meeting at work the other day and decided I would open it up on a road that is normally not to busy with cops and you can usually pick them out.

So, I got up to about 110 on my 12X and the explorer in front of me starts to flash all over and he starts to point to the side with his hand out the window. So I pulled over in front of me. He asked what my hurry was and told him.

He said since he hasn't seen me before and I have a clean record he let me go. I am assuming he didn't get a lock but not sure. Don't know AL cops very well yet. But I like them so far!!!

Watch out for the AL State Troopers Buelltoys, they aren't exactly as friendly about such things. I've only been pulled over twice on my XB9S. Both were State Troopers, I got a ticket both times. One of which wasn't even deserved, but I beat it in court.

I wish I had Ez-rider's luck in such matters.

I wish I had Ez's luck too. Unfortunately I hate the CHP, and all state/ city pigs alike. I have lost resepct for them since some assclown decided to pull me over on a wide open highway for going 80 in a 60. Im upset because after I showed my military ID and DL he told me to turn around put my hands on my head and searched me. What a moron, works somewhere in Simi Valley, CA

Vaneo1,

I'm sure you have your share of asshats within the Coast Guard too. Every job has them.

Try not to paint all law enforcement with the same brush. Everyone has an jackass in their office, regardless of their occupation. Does that mean that because you share an office with a jackass you also become a jackass by default?

I'm not defending every cop here, but remember that you were doing 80 in a 60. The treatment you received would likely never of happened had you not been speeding.

We all push the speed limit from time to time. Just remember that when you CHOOSE to do that, you also assume the risk of being stopped for speeding, and all that goes with it, including a ticket.

If the police didn't stop you from breaking the law right in front of them, where should they draw that line? They have a job to do, just like you. It's unfortunate that it sounds like you may have dealt with someone who made it personal. Not everyone with a uniform is like that, at least in my country.

I can guarantee you'll never have ex_rider's luck with your current attitude, especially if you express it like you did here.

Cheers,

Trent

I think it's funny how people can have such a wildly different perspective of a motorcycle. Don't get me wrong here, I like Buell's and I'm planning on buying one. But I consider a Buell to be one of the "slow" bikes out there. One of the reasons I want to get one is that it'll help curb my speeding.

Wow - I guess it's all relative. I'm coming from Harleys, so the Buell feels like a rocket to me. I see absolutely no need for any more power than my XB12 provides. I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder!

Buying a Buell wont curb your speeding problem. I got a ticket in a ford truck. If its a problem, it doesnt matter what you drive.

The speed limits are set in such a way that unless you're riding something perhaps 500cc or below you still have massive potential to break the speed limit. I hit 80 on a 45mph road by accident on my 9S just by easily cruising through the gears. Then I got tagged by a ST.

Its really up to the rider.

canadianbacon,
Your RIGHT your absolutely RIGHT!!! I cant beleive it why didnt I see it that way? Oh thats right a little thing called an opinion is what stopped me. Yes I broke the law, but when you have a freakin f-150 passing you at say 90+ while your breaking the law and your the one that gets tagged, that sucks. Further, the road was straight away, wide open, and he tried to lecture me on motorclycle safety and I could have hit an obstacle, blah blah blah. Probably just looking to put something on a supplement for a promotion. Anyway, I have my opinion about state level authorities and Im sticking to it. Statistics in the CJ system show too many disparities for me to change my opinion. I.e. my opinion does not rest on a single traffic stop, it merely enforced it. The conducted search was more like an f-you because I showed him federal identification [hoping to receive a warning, not to say I work on a higher level]. Just count me as one of the many citizens who have a morose view of state level LE. sorry man, dont want to start any fires here but I appreciate your concern.

Vaneo1...get thing into perspective mate, you've lost all respect for the law cause you got caught breaking the law....grow up man! I would be interested to see if your lack of respect suddenly re-appeared when you call the police in a time of need(and I hope that never happens) say like your involved in a pile up or being mugged etc. I dare say your stinking attitude contributed enormously to your ticket...well done, but you will learn from it, wont you. And, from all the 'city pigs' out there..you're the moron and I would like to say that I had lost all respect for you, but that would be childish, wouldn't it?

There are some cops I hate. Like the ones you party with (not because you're friends, but because that's the situation you're in that evening) at the bar, do way too many shots, then he drives me and some others home. <-Hes a cop he can get away with it.
Picture that same cop sitting in his comfortable cruiser watching while his partner puts the cuffs on you for a dwi.

You took your chances, you got caught.

But believe me, you go somewhere else and start whining about having gotten caught doing something wrong, its not going to get you a lot of sympathy.

Think about it, could you have possibly failed an attitude check at the start of the encounter? That is the key moment.

I've been pulled for speeding two times in the last 10 years, got off with off the record warnings both times.

Jack

Vaneo, I got a felony because of two nasty CHP officers that lied in court and said I was evading pursuit back in 93. They affected my life in a most heinous way. I was going 150mph on an empty freeway in the middle of the night so by my own actions opened the door up to being railroaded.

I had two backwoods Georgia cops turn dogs on me while sleeping during my bicycle ride across the U.S. 22 years ago. They did this for fun and I am lucky to be alive.

Wed I was doing 135mph on an empty desert road sandwiched between two CHP officers. One on an R-1 the other on a Ninja 636. Riding with these guys is awesome for a couple of reasons. For one I know that being ticketed while riding with these guys is not likely to happen. They are both superb riders and ride "polite". They do not pass on double yellows unless the car pulls over a bit. They do not blast by other riders and they are fun to hang out with.

If I Meow sported a "lump them all in one group" meow attitude I would have meow missed out of some of the best meow rides I have ever been meow on. Just something for you to think meow about..............

Super Troopers is a favorite of mine also.

Thanks guys for all of your comments, some of you even put some more detail into the story as if you were actually there. Wow, assumptions are inadequate I NEVER said I gave the officer attitude. In fact I didnt say anything to the officer, AND I did all of the little BS recommendations such as dismount the bike, pull all gear off, remove sunglasses, etc. I know this is hard for many of you to grasp therefore I will not try to do any more explaining. my gripe is not with the actual ticket nor is it with the actual stop. Had you people been reading more closely you would have seen it. It was the officers "I have a badge attitude, step off" that pissed me off. Again, I was compliant during the ENTIRE traffic stop, next time you get pulled over ask the officer to stare at your for half a minute (which felt like an eternity by the way) and just look down on you since many of you seem to be so pro-police.
BTW I have been on the need for assistance end in legal matter requring police assistance. The city police (around here) will go after what they can if its a stone thrown away. I was actually almost killed by my wifes ex-boyfriend (back when we were dating) at one time as he tried to run me off the road. Did they get him, no, no, no. If the crime is post-fact expect them between 12 and 5 yea like wating for the cable guy.
I think I will go buy a lottery ticket and then go for a nice ride since today appears to be my day. I appreciate the adhominem-osity I can always count on a few special bad webbers. Not looking for sympathy, just sharing some info on this thread that has obviously gone overboard

I wonder how many people the trooper has scraped up off the road?

Having pulled more than my share of dead bodies out of the water, due in some cases to improper actions or the operator, poor or no equipment etc. I took a very dim view of people who were violators. Was I a Billy bad ass? no not really. It some time gets to you after a few stupid accidents. I have also worked as an EMT and I can tell you it is the police officers who are usually there first. Did you ever see a young police officer with tears running down his face saying over and over there was nothing I could do? Hey you are human just like the rest of us. Before the brain kicks in I am pissed when stopped. Usually given a few seconds I cool down. Some do some don't. Sometimes it is just the look on the face or the way the requests to do things are followed that tips an officers tude towards you. Think about it. I do not know how you reacted I was not there and can not comment on it. But you were there. How would you react to your actions? I don't know for sure but my guess is that you are not in a rate that does any LE. If you were you would know that if this guy were out of line there is a legal way to handle it. Having spent my time in California in Santa Barbara doing Maritime LE, I got to know lots of Chippys and sheriffs. They don't want a jerk in their midst. that reflects on all of them trying to do a great job. By the same token they are not going to take any crap from anyone. Walk in their shoes and you find out that they survive by anticipateing problems. I'm sure that there is a ride along program you could participate in and find out what I am talking about. Anyway think about it.
Would the Chief steer you wrong?
