Anyone know if the stock ECM is the same for the XB12R and the XB12X, perhaps a part number comparison if nobody knows off the top of their head.

It would seem that my ECM was fried by the battery polarity issue from a couple weeks ago.

I believe that the 12X ecm has different mapping for low end torque, per magazine articles I've read on the Uly

I've seen the maps, they are NOT different. The Uly and other 06 XB12s share the same config ID ECMs, which are different than the 04-05 XB12 config IDs. But the maps are the same. It is in the algorithms that use the maps that there must be differences, but we can't see those.

I do not believe the algorithm differences are that huge. I think the changes are more in the fault handling and corner case operating conditions. I'd bet one of the changes involves the temperature that the fan kicks on, as the 06's seem to run their fans more than previous model years.

I have a theory that this may have less to do with the need for more rear cylinder cooling and more to do with the draft profile due to the location that the airbox sucks it's air. I think the lack of the hole through the frame, coupled with the location under the right side knee, results in an airflow pattern where the hot air coming up off the header and rear cylinder moves up through the hole in the frame and into the cutouts into the airbox. But if the fan is running, it creates a low pressure zone that results in more of the air off the rear cylinder being drawn out of the back instead of circulating up into the airbox. Like I said, just a theory, I have no empirical evidence to back it up.

I still haven't figured out why the holes into the airbox are on the right side of the top cover instead of the left. It seems that the left would be better from a heat perspective, and it also seems that the proximity of the holes to the air cleaner element would be better on the left so that the air can more easily fan out through the intake air filter. The air cleaner is not centered in the box. But those Buell guys are smart, I'm sure there is a reason.

Al, I'll bet the reason the holes in the air box cover are on the
right has more to do with intake noise abatement than performance.
Sound waves don't go around corners well.
